rf, I think the cat pees out of the box. Also even though the tenant scoops the litter, the PEE is what smells. That ammonia smell. It doesn’t bother me because you can’t smell it in the hall; it isn’t that bad. I am just observing that here is a girl who is neat as a pin and her apartment smells bad. For me, it isn’t worth it.
I have 2 cats & have had for over 40 years. People who don’t know when they visit can leave w/o knowing – there is no odor. I clean the boxes twice a day – the clumping litter (& esp. World’s Best) makes it easy to keep boxes not smelling.
The tree: The morning after the tornado Parks Dept. cut down the tree but left heaved pavement w/ roots, etc. I had the pavement evened out as much as possible. A week later they lifted the roots & I had the pavement redone – completely level. Last week a Parks Dept. guy cut a bit more of the pavement around the pit – happily on a neighbor’s concrete, not my bluestone. This a.m. a subcontractor – Bello – put in the tree. Big backhoe dug the hole & various trucks came w/ tree, infill, etc. Very efficient operation. All I paid for was the 2 times I had the pavers re-set.
Different smells, though. Dogs can really reek and it gets all over you. there are new cat litters out there that do an amazing job- World’s Best multi-cat litter is one. I love my cats- wouldn’t give them up for anything. There’s nothing like waking up in the morning to see your cat sitting on your chest, staring at you with those big alien green eyes, for all the world like a vulture. Of course there’s nothing like having a cat sitting on your chest and purring like an engine.
M4L, this tenant just suddenly had a cat, no discussion but I never specified anything in the lease (just like she asked me WHERE she should chain up her bike, not IF she could). M4L, she had not done any damage with the cat, AND I am sure she is more fastidious than most people. So I think she is fine. As long as I am not affected by it, which I am not. I just don’t want one for myself because I don’t need more work in order to keep a clean house. It is hard enough.
Donatella, it could be that the cat peed outside of the box and part of it was missed when they cleaned. Hard to find sometimes. A good cat box shouldn’t smell at all. Ours doesn’t.
dogs smell up houses, cats don’t
if passed up rentals because the place reeks of wet dog.
omg cats most certainly DO smell up houses!!! you were just smelling wet dog, duh of course a wet dog is going to smell. even when i didnt have a dog and went to peoples houses who had dogs i never really smelled dog. it might just be the amount tho. most people dont hoard dogs, but it seems like a lot of people have a tendency to hoard cats.
Nice DIBS. My only issue with this area is they get pounded with hurricanes every other year it seems. Still, I like it a lot. And there’s a costco!

Dona – when’s the lease renewal? Grandfather in that cat but put a restriction on any further pets. This tenant is pushy.
Here’s my neighbor’s place that rents from $7,000 – $19,000 per week
