  1. “New Orleans has a place called something like “The National Museum of World War II”. Come again? Two questions:

-what central role did New Orleans play in WWII?

-What the hell is the purpose of such a place? “Interactive” displays of death and destruction? Please. Our kids barely know history, and we’re squandering money on places like this.”

First of all, benson, museums are cultural centers- the addition of any to a city is a plus. Heavens, what a jaded soul you are.

second- why does New Orleans have to have played a “central” role in WW II to have such a museum? The name implies that the scope of it is not limited to local New Orleans involvement, but national involvement. Ask to New Orleans’ role in WW II- why don’t you ask the men and women who served from New Orleans? Do you think their hard work and sacrifice doesn’t earn them the right to have such a museum? As much as your lack of military service deny you the right to make comments on a WW II museum.

    3. You last statement is so contradictory it almost bears ignoring but let me try to answer you. As you say- kids don’t know history today so what is the purpose of a museum that might teach them? Oh I dunno, benson, maybe because WW II was a huge event and its influence is felt on our society to this day? Since you don”t know what the interactive displays do teach, perhaps you should forbear commenting until you actually know something. As for “squandering money,” I guess you think education is not worth spending money on, nor is honoring the memories of those who fought and died for this country.

This from the guy who rabidly waves the flag at every opportunity and claims to stand up for his country against us liberals. what a laugh.

  2. “who here who lives in brownstone brooklyn doesn’t have to transfer trains to get to work in the AM?”

I don’t. Then again I walk over the Bridge. 🙂

But when I train it, I don’t have to transfer.

    Why do you ask?

Oh, and BTW, it’s a good thing I’m less than 10 minutes from the train, DH. 😉

  3. sick today 🙁 not food allergy like i thought yesterday, just gross cold or something. was watching the morning news this morning and they have plans on the table to extend the MTA subway into jersey, specifically the 7 train into secaucus. that’s kinda cool. it was christie’s plan all along to nix the other giant expensive project and go ahead with this one which is gaining a lot of support and supposedly will cost half the cost of the other tunnel project.

    *rob*

  4. haha nyguy – we’ve already had this discussion – just playing.

unofficial survey – who here who lives in brownstone brooklyn doesn’t have to transfer trains to get to work in the AM?

  5. oh, Benson, I am sorry about your ankle. Advil, soaking in epsom salts and an ace bandage will help.

I forgot to say, my favorite in NOLA is the Friends of the Cabildo tour of the French Quarter. Don’t know if you would want to do that with a messed up ankle, but it is about a 2 hour tour of the French quarter by a very knowledgeable quide on the history of NOLA and Louisana. There was a lot of foreign influence with the French and the Spanish briefly ruling New Orleans. Best book about the Mississippi and New Orleans was the Rising Tide by John Barry about the 1927 flood of the Mississippi river, purposely diverted to flood the bayous and southern Louisana to miss Nola. You get a lot of good info on New Orleans society.

  6. “The “War Crimes Museum” in Ho Chi Minh City was quite interesting. Of course you can imagine who committed all of these crimes!!!!”

I have some pictures from that place. We were quite foolish and graphic with some of our poses.

  7. “oh yeah – your in the class of people that think the L train enters some sorta of time warp and takes longer to get anywhere in manhattan that areas in brownstone brooklyn on the crappy R and F trains!”

The L train goes from Williamsburg to 14th st. That’s it. It really doesn’t take you anywhere. It’s totally fine if you only hang out on 14th and no where else but since most people have jobs in either midtown or wall st area the L train ain’t gonna get you there. How ever fast it’ll get you to Union Sq or 7th ave is irrelevant. You still have to transfer to another line to go north of south.
