Rob, think Snappy meant free in the sense of independent of great grades (ie gets scholarship, grants, etc) or low income (ie grants,…). Not that I researched it but dont recall any state offering Free Tuition to residents
“The world has changed since then & it’d be harder to do but I think an important aspect of the 4 years of college is simply the maturation process.”
I agree. There is an excellent chapter in Chris Hedges’s book Empire of Illusion entitled “The Illusion of Wisdom.” It talks about how English majors have declined, but business majors have become 22% of all college majors.
I often wonder if I’d even be accepted to my alma mater now if I were 18 again.

Do any states still do the free tuition to state schools for residents?
new jersey was pretty good when it came to grant and scholarship money for residents who went to school in state. they are horrible tho about not telling 18 year olds that it’s stupid to take out as much in student loans as you are allowed for video games, cd’s, and clothes.
noki, I’m not dismissing entire swaths of the social sciences. As I said, I missed out on college so it would be silly of me to do so. All I was questioning was your interpretation of how a degree in either would result in a better understanding of how to get along with different people. Especially as this vaunted diversity is sorely lacking at higher private colleges.
I manage a couple of internet literature lists, one South Asian, one African American, both that have a lot of academics and profs. One thing that they constantly express is the dismay at the way they and their subjects are treated by white students.
I guess my point is that you can’t teach diversity to people who don’t want to learn, and that if you do want to learn, you probably don’t need to be taught it.
I hope I haven’t contributed to your feeling
that this is an OT boy’s club. :o(
my last few political posts were only about
pinching those on the Left a little.
I don’t think I really belive that the Leftists
of today have their root in a dissastifaction with
the structure of our work/society model.
I’d really have to consider that thought more to
decide if I really think it’s true.
Pete, if the kid wants to go to CUNY, I’ll pay that. even if he blows it, I would still have enough funding to support him to get some other degree or some grad degree some where.

Snappy, there were states in more recent yrs that offered free state tuition for residents?

I’d worry less about telling the kid what to major in and more time convincing him that CUNY is the best thing going.
