  1. “5. California in particular is on course to ask for a federal bailout. They just elected more of the same without a good plan to pay for their budget deficit in the billions. I am really curious to see how Jerry Brown cleans up the California mess.”

No republican or democrat can fix that mess. For years now, some lesser known elected officials and private citizens in California have been calling for a convention to change the state constitution, which is the problem NOT the party affiliation of the governor.

Some people give political parties far too much credit.

  2. 1. The President Obama agenda was clearly repudiated yesterday with huge wins in the house and significant gains in the Senate.

**If it was clearly repudiated there would be a Republican majority in the Senate as well. the message is more mixed than you believe*

    2. The GOP isn’t called the “big tent” without reason,
they have a wide spectrum of positions and Tea Party ideas for less government and less taxation will continue to evolve and learn from their experiences yesterday.
Please stop thinking of your fellow Americans as “extremists” and you will start on the road to a better country.

*The GOP is NOT called the Big Tent.*

    3. Side point: just because a woman stands against abortion on demand does not make her an “extremist”. Bxgrl,I’m talking to you. Her view may be extreme from your perspective but it is not for a large percentage of women.

    * I stand by my premise- extremists are extremists are extremists. And I don’t call women who are against abortion extremists- I call them misguided. My issues with Palin are way more far-reaching. And the majority of people in this country are pro-choice.*

    6. Ironically, the Republicans may be in a better position, not winning the Senate outright.
The president can’t use the “Republican obstruction” angle.
Dems still have 2/3’s of Washington.

*You’re naive if you think Republicans simply won’t continue their present policy of obstruct, obstruct, obstruct. Your statement makes no sense whatsoever*

    7. Bottom line, Mr. President; moderate your positions or
    face defeat in 2012.

*Considering this president is far more of a moderate than the last one, and a centrist, this comment is simply a hoot. The election isn’t based on his policies, it was based on what people perceived the President has or has not accomplished*

  3. I doubt I would vote for Palin as nominee. Not because of her views, but because I don’t see her carrying 50%+ of the vote nationally. I would love for the Repubs to find someone with similar stances but less controversial personally. Right now the problem is that they are all bark but no bite when it comes to governing. Would like to see that reversed.

  4. I didn’t honestly expect all the women of the OT to just bust out and say “oh yeah you’re so right lech I’m totally threatened by Sarah Palin.” All responses duly noted. I stand by what I said.

And Gem: She’s not a dumb broad.

  5. “Slade, no embedded videos here, no avatars, no hammocks, no cocktails, no strippers, no .50 on the ridge for security, and there is the occasional sandy vajandy. But now that the beach is gone It’s what we’ve got.”

jackal, we love hanging out with you all day, too. I’ve generally succeeded in getting the OT posted early every day. I’ve broached the topic of avatars. And clearly you have zero imagination because I’ve been on the beach drinking Long Island Iced Teas since dawn, which puts me under my hammock, and, you may have missed them, but there are strippers aplenty in the bar next to the cabanas. Sheesh.

  6. Lech – I hate on Sarah b/c of her Wedge sandals first and foremost. I don’t at all feel threatened by her or her ilk as her type of woman has always been around.

What does scare me is that she thinks she win the Republican candidacy. The fact she announced she “might run for president if asked or if no other viable Republican candidate comes forward” to MARY FRIGGIN HART ON ET is a strange strategy.
Also am SOOOOOO tired of her rhetoric and she’s a dumb broad

  7. It’s going to be a cold winter….

    When Evelyn Browning
Garriss at The Browning Newsletter speaks, we listen.
We’ve learned to do so. History has taught us that.
“Browning” is one of the better, long term weather
forecasting reports we read on a consistent basis, and
the latest edition has our attention for Ms. Garriss writes
of weather in football game terms noting that this winter
we may see a potential pile on. Three enormous weather
patterns are surrounding North America. All
three cause cold winter weather. Expect to be
    flattened.
Ms. Garriss notes that the La Nina in the Pacific Ocean
has taken the ocean temperatures there down quite
    sharply. As she says

    Temperatures between 0.5°C – 1.0°C (0.9° –
1.8°F) below normal are considered a “weak”
La Nina. When the chill is more than 1.0°C
(1.8°F) below normal, the event is “moderate.”
Now temperatures range from 1.4°C (2.5°F)
below normal in the central Pacific around Fiji
to 2.0°C (3.6°F) off the coast of Peru.

She notes further that although the temperatures in the
central Pacific are holding steady at the current rather
archly low levels, they are continuing to fall in the
eastern Pacific off the coast of S. America. She also
notes that it is not just cool water temperatures that she
finds worrisome. There are other global weather effects
in place that serve to make the current La Nina material
and worrisome. We will try to detail those effects in the
days ahead, but she summarizes her findings with the
    following rather ominous statement:

If all of these are combined, then the current
La Nina is the strongest in over 70 years. It is
almost as intense as the La Nina in the winters
of 1955-1956. It is currently almost two
standard deviations below normal and most
models expect the phenomenon to intensify
    over the next three months.
