  1. “To defend myself against tyranny. Exactly what the 2nd amendment is all about.

    The people are sovereign, right?

And sovereignty is the monopoly over violence, right?

So then if the state has a monopoly over violence, how can the people be sovereign?”

    Not agreeing with this “logic.”

First- we are not a tyranny.
Second- sovereignty is rightful power and authority. If it is a monopoly over violence, that is one of its consequences, but unfortunately nothing and no one has a monopoly over violence.

We gave the government sovereignty because it represents us. That’s why we vote (Of course this is in an ideal world). By saying giving the state sovereignty to act over violence means the people are not sovereign essentially undermines the whole concept of a democratic government.

Self-defense is unquestionable- the government recognizes this. But you seem to be saying the Second Amendment gives people the right to act as if society is a gunfight at the OK corral.

Bearing in mind the era in which the second amendment was written, nearly 300 years later some things need changing. We aren’t firing muskets these days- the firepower the average person can get access to these days could have blown the entire Revolutionary Army off the map in 2 days. With greater firepower comes greater responsibility- and that part seems to be lagging.

  2. Yes. The Doberman was expertly trained as well as roommate before he got her. She flunked out of guard dog school because she was too docile. She was taunted to someone who was not backing down. You cannot deny that this breed has biting force something like 200 pounds per sq inch. Broader headed shorter muzzle dogs like Rotties and Pits have more.

I love all dogs, but can’t support the “my dog or this breed would never hurt anyone” blanket statement.

Benson, hello. Give the new one some time to come out of her shell. You will get to appreciate her for herself. And/Or find her a slightly spunkier companion that will complement her personality when the time is right!

  3. So jackal,

Who, in your analysis, is regulating the well-regulated militia? Do you really think the framers thought everyone needed to be free to own guns to protect themselves in an unregualted fashion against the system of government the framers were forming? The amendment’s framers had something in mind that doesn’t quite map onto our 20th century polarized fight over its meaning.
