  1. re: school supplies list.

yeah they can be long. def. dont need everything. i dont remember having school supply lists in school either really.

when i took my first painting class in college we had a list of supplies we had to go to pearl paint and buy :-/
hundreds of dollars spent on that crap, i’d say only about 20 percent of the stuff was actually ever put to use. it was the same with a lot of art classes, you eventually learn what you really need and you really dont need. of course there were always those scrubs who’d buy nothing and borrow your supplies.

  2. Dave, my daughter’s elementary school was trapped in a district-wide math program called TERC, with hands-on crap and estimating–just what you want 5- and 6-year-olds to learn.

At the end of 3rd grade, the city made an announcement that they would institute a citywide standard curriculum in math and English. The very wise principal of the school immediately sent the custodian to the basement where he unearthed math books from 1992 so everyone could learn their math facts FIRST, and then learn about number relationships, etc. Of course she always made sure the kids knew their times tables, etc. regardless of the flavor-du-jour of instruction.

  3. “They are so afraid of not being prepared that they carry every journal, workbook, and supply they think they might need.”

I suspect your kids might be rather conscientious students. This, I assume, does not apply to the NYC student body as a whole!!!!

  4. hmmm. i dont remember us having snacktime in grade school. in pre-school im pretty sure we did, maybe kindergarten? but kindergarten was half day so maybe that was just lunch or breakfast. we did however have many many many bakes sales.

it was always funny watching the kids buy friends are bake sales.

  5. Don’t get me started on the textbooks. My daughter’s class spent an entire period the other day with whiteout cleaning up about a decade’s worth of accumulated doodles, graffiti and profanities scribbled into their textbooks. My daughter actually kept count of how many times she had to white out the “F word.” Let’s just say the answer to ET’s little math problem this morning puts us in the right ballpark.

As to backpacks, it is hard to get the kids to realize that they can plan and leave some stuff home ro at school. They are so afraid of not being prepared that they carry every journal, workbook, and supply they think they might need.
