  1. Really wish you people would stop talking about “snipping” vis-a-vis jackal’s procedure. I know what he’s having done. But, when you say “snipping” it has such Lorena Bobbitt connotations that I cringe and protect myself where it counts.

  2. I think apprenticeship is a great way to educate kids- but not in all fields. There is a need for structured learning- but with professional fields like the sciences, math, etc being so complex and fast moving, apprenticeships would be accessory programs.

That said, experience is a great teacher. I got through school essentially teaching myself because I couldn’t hear what was going on in class. I never formally studied graphic art and design but I absorbed everything I could like a sponge. Still, there are gaps that I know a student with a degree in graphics arts wouldn’t have.

But most important, I think, are parents who are involved in teaching their kids, and teachers who love teaching. I know some teachers who do it only because it’s a job, not because they love teaching. No better way to turn off students.

  3. MM,

    Why Robert Stern?
He seems a surprising choice for you.

did you catch the Vanity Fair
article recently on the 50 greatest
structures of the past half century

btw, I consider Vanity Fair a leftist
rag in terms of political objectivity,
but I do love their in depth articles
on all manner of cultural matters.
