  1. “I think kids should be able to choose to apprentice in any field starting when they are maybe 12 or 13 years old. Instead of going to school.”

When I read this I thought you must not have had too many friends growing up. What time are you going to get snipped?

  2. Lech, me too.

I think there is great merit in the old guild system of apprenticeship. Many crafts, trades and professions would do well bringing at least some of that back. The problem is, in this litiginous and complex world, is assuring quality. If I wanted to be an architect, I’d want to apprentice to Robert Stern, not the guy building the Fedders down the street. However, I don’t have the connections to get anywhere near Stern, who is swamped with requests for apprentices, but perhaps the Fedders guy knows my cousin, and I can get a position. The Fedders guy could be a frustrated genius, or a hack. At least if I’m at Columbia school of architecture, I’m going to get a cross section of teachers and knowledge, from the justifiably famous to the unknown academic who could be the premier expert on structural integrity.

All that to say that school has its merits. Socialization, diversification and opportunity among them, and not just in higher ed. I think a true revolution in teaching from pre-school on up is needed, combining the best of all the various disciplines of learning.

    Another of my pipe dreams.
