lech – I’m suprised you put me on the list – unless my grasp on reality is shaky it was you who got your panties in a twist about my initial provocative statement, not vice versa.
I love the Internet. You can be totally blunt and never have to deal with people physically stomping out of the room or screaming or throwing things at you.
Don’t push your luck …. no, wait, you HAVE been pushing your luck.
Re your education comments earlier, I read Ivan Illych — Deschooling of Society –when I was beginning college. It meant a lot to me then and had a powerful effect on me. I really did not have much fun in college. I just desperately wanted my adult life of earning money to begin. The book dealt with the institutionalized learning and had critiques on our educational system. I think it reinforced my idea of what it really meant to learn and started me on all kinds of projects for learning on my own.
“I think kids should be able to choose to apprentice in any field starting when they are maybe 12 or 13 years old. Instead of going to school. For certain fields (medicine, for example) they would have to go through some formal higher schooling before getting licensed.”
Get out of my head. I’m working on this right now. I seriously want to see this implemented in public schools.
I was talking to my friend’s brother one day and trying to figure out some math problem. This dude has a GED and only finished 9th grade. Well, he did the problem in his head in SECONDS. He told me his job, he builds giant pipes for utilities, requires him to be able to do basic trig functions. He failed every math class he ever took. I finished up math through calculus. He learned on the job through something he actually enjoys.

Lech, so you’re going after your buddy Rob now?
Why are so people rigid in their thinking about education, skills, and employment? Skills gained on many jobs can easily be applied to another.

I majored in Poli Sci. I haven’t done anything close to that. Ever.
Lech – happy to help.
The bad news is I am now occasionally finding glimmers of sense in a few of your kooky ideas. Maybe it’s time for another vacation.
