  1. >It isn’t easy to let one’s own philosophies and beliefs enter into the decisions without wondering if that will be detrimental to one’s child in the long run

Biff, you need to get over this fear. All choices are imperfect in the long run, and second-guessing yourself could lead to disaster. It’s precisely the well-learning kids, self motivated, who don’t need private school (as long, of course as there’s a safe & decent public school). I have no doubt that my son’s experience in a private school would’ve been different and he’dve turned out different, but I won’t say ‘better’. Of course, as I said before, I’m not grooming him for Harvard either. That’s as bad as voting GOP.

  2. cgar, I would guess that the following individuals have yelled profanity at their computer screens on at least one occassion in response to things I have written (or at least had a strong urge to do so):

    – cobble
    – bxgrl
    – cmu
    – park sloper
    – ditto
    – noki

    Anyone else I’m leaving out?

  3. “*Some* children, a very small percentage, unless the outside learning is conducted by trained teachers in a disciplined environment. Even in medieval times, the apprentices were trained by older and wiser members of the profession…definitely ‘experts’.”

Nope. All children can learn by interacting and functioning outside the classroom. Always.

  4. “I love the Internet. You can be totally blunt and never have to deal with people physically stomping out of the room or screaming or throwing things at you.”

To paraphrase one of the great OT lines:Don’t lawyers pay extra for that sort of thing?

  5. When I was in boot camp someone realized I had never graduated from high school. They had just never asked because I gave them my college transcript. Well you have to be a high school graduate to join the US armed services, so I got a direct order from the officer in charge that I was to go get a GED as soon as I graduated from boot camp. I am, to this day, in violation of this direct order from a superior officer.

  6. “never have to deal with people physically stomping out of the room or screaming or throwing things at you”

LOL, but how do you know what people are actually doing when reading and responding to your posts? They are almost certainly screaming at you; prolly stomping out of the room; may well be throwing things at you via their computers, which they prolly then regret; and, some here, prolly have little lechacal voodoo dolls (no, I’m not naming names).

  7. ishtar summarized it well. The dilemma for parents is whether or not to buy into the current system when they recognize that the current system is so strongly geared towards test scores and what school the kids went to with such little recognition of “real world” learning and experiences. Like many parents, we thought it was best overall for our kids to go to a public school, with all of the advantages and disadvantages that came with, versus going to a private school. Now we struggle with other decisions. It’s very difficult to not follow what others are doing when it’s your child’s education in question. It isn’t easy to let one’s own philosophies and beliefs enter into the decisions without wondering if that will be detrimental to one’s child in the long run.
