  1. Legion, First of all, Bxgrl and I didn’t “make” Benson leave. He did that all on his own. And he’s still around, anyway. See the Coney Island thread today.

I only chose Robert Stern because he was the first person I could think of that wasn’t Frank Gehry, and I didn’t have time to wrack my poor brain for contemporary architects that I like (who do exist, btw). Stern has done some good stuff, plus he’s the head of the Yale School of Architecture, and I can remember that. No, I didn’t see VF.

Jessi, I’m on the board of a non-profit. Raising money is the most difficult thing you can possibly imagine. This dead architect is most definitely a For Profit organization.

    Dave, you insult me!

  2. “Tracking kids from the age of 12 or 13 in some modern-day version of medieval apprenticeships is a GREAT idea. Love it. Let’s see if we can widen that chasm between the have’s and have-not’s juuuusssst a wee bit more… THERE. That oughta do it.”

No one said apprenticeships would be for less lucrative callings. One could easily apprentice for law or derivatives trading, for example.

JB: In an hour. Leaving shortly.

  3. Noki, Germany does apprenticeships very well. The difference is that in Germany if you work with your hands you’re not considered an uneducated lout or a throwback to medieval times. And the strength of their economy shows it.

What do we do here with all these highly educated liberal-arts grads? We can only use so many graphic designers, media consultants, finance gurus (look where that got us), lawyers, etc.

I’ll go for liberal elitist poofery here, altho I have to admit we tracked our daughter that way. Engineering material she wasn’t tho.

  4. How about that “Pledge To America” from the Republicans!!!

It’s patterned after the “Contract with America”, which House Republicans unveiled in 1994, during Clinton’s first ter. Six weeks after that the party swept the midterm elections, gaining a majority in the House for the first time in 40 years.
