“but if it’s not offered to you, and you’re hungry, it seems odd to me that you’d be hesitant to just tell your “friend” “hey, i’m hungry – do you have anything to eat?””
Well, it can be awkward for a number of reasons. One, as a guest, you don’t want to put your host out cooking another meal just for you. So there is a bit of ‘a dance’ that goes on. But a good host should be aware of this.
Example: My 80 yr. old aunt is a grazer. I don’t stay with her very often, as we’re usually in some other city all staying in hotels or with other family. We talked about our habits shortly after I walked in the door for a week long visit in her home. She gets up to swim at 5am, and comes back and eats breakfast at 6 or so. I’m crawling out of bed at 7 or 8. So she pointed out breakfast things in fridge/cabinets, coffee maker, etc., and told me to help myself, and asked if there were anything she didn’t have that I might like (and we could go shop for). As it turns out, she had everything l like: coffee, milk, cereal and/or yogurt, fruit. She also doesn’t eat more than a snack for dinner. But she cooked a dinner for me the first night. We went over what I might like to eat otherwise, as she recognizes that she’s “odd’ that way, but I actually like to eat that way, too, so it worked out. We shopped for a few things and ate a big meal for lunch (out while visiting museums/sights) every day. It was great, but had we not had that convo, and had I stood around waiting for her to fix meals for me, it could have been hell. Fortunately, she was an aware/sensitive host and we communicated.
CG – I actually haven’t read any of your friend’s books, but now I’m curious and will see if any of my Danish friends have copies I can borrow. Interesting, too, how the son of famous parents can reinvent himself in a land where nobody knows who his family is. Anyway, thanks for sharing!
“I once went out for Halloween as a Freudian slip. I wore a slip with the words “Ego”, “Id”, “Superego”, “Oedipal Complex”, “Fausse Reconnaisance”, “Penis Envy”, etc. all over it.”
Ugh. How totally white and educated of you. I don’t talk to anyone wearing a halloween costume that is supposed to tell me what an intellectual they are. Next time just go as something chilish and / or lowbrow.
I always wear the same costume because I never have time to buy a new one and I still haven’t run out of spirit gum to put on the moustache. I dress like Mr Peanut and / or the Monopoly Man.
“And I don’t think that the President’s view of this
nation has, at it’s base, an acknowledgement of the
strong religious values which molded its birth.”
You know, Legion, the Declaration of Independence was written largely by Unitarians? Adams, Jefferson, and Franklin were Unitarians in belief, if not always by membership. So I think it is the religious right that has a distorted view of the religious underpinnings of the US. What they mean by “Christian nation” is very different than how the founders thought.
There were lots of religious values behind the founding of the US, but not in any monolithic way — Unitarians, Congregationalsits, Quakers, Anglicans, early Baptists, etc.
But I don’t see that video as a freudian slip. I see it as a guy trying to remember the words and not quite getting it right. I am about the same age as Obama, and I am having more senior moments than I would like to admit. Obama doesn’t wear god on his sleeve, but he is not uncomfortable with faith and, particualrly, organized religion. I think he sees organized religion as important to comunity. He ahs a maintstream protestant demeanor, not a born-again demeanor to any discussion of religion.
And m4l, you did’nt read about the Goldman departnering “rumors”? They’re cutting bottom to top.
***Bid half off peak comps***
I see that I haven’t missed much.

I actually think the costume is clever, Biff. I’m just busting your chops for being super duper white about Halloween.

“4.) if i go in my bedroom and close the door it means i need to be alone for a bit and collect my thoughts”
Funny, *rob*, I’ve never heard what you do in your beanbag chair referred to as collecting your thoughts.
