  1. Biff, there are reasons that you think that the position is not suitable for you. However, if you like the financial institution, do you think that by interviewing for the position you might be able to get to know more about what they are doing to possibly identify something more suitable for you? If you don’t think so, and your main concern is the “trouble” the friend has gone to, then you can thank her very much for her effort and consideration, but tell her that after considering all the circumstances that you don’t think that it is right for you and think it would be better for everyone if you didn’t pursue it. Re: practice, if you know it is the wrong job, then I don’t think there is any value to that.

  2. “the process was a bit backwards as I had to submit an application and indicate availability for an interview prior to speaking to the friend of my colleague. ”

Ah, ok, that’s a different kettle of fish.

Then you may have to go through with the interview. And you never know, even if you say no in the end, perhaps they’ll keep you in mind if another position more suited to you opens up? Dunno.

  3. “Question: do I still go through the formal interview process just to meet people and hone my interviewing skills”

Biff, much as I hate to disagree with my law partner JB, I say, yes, definitely. Everything to gain. Nothing to lose. You never know what other positions may come (nh) from meeting people while interviewing, which has been my experience. Every job I’ve had has come through networking. Plus which the Death Star clearly doesn’t appreciate your talents and, no doubt, your humour. 😉

  4. “This a job, not a new pair of chinos that your wife bought for you – you don’t have to fake it.”

I agree, better to be as nice as possible, thank friend (and other contacts) profusely. Say something like “Not quite the right thing for me at this time.” I don’t think you have to go into any explanation of the “why it’s not”. Just be super nice, express appreciation and be honest.
