We can withdraw from Afghanistan and we should. Whether Obama wants to risk the “wimp” label or not is all that is stopping him. To me there is nothing to be gained from our engagement there. There is nothing in the historical record to suggest anything but a highly costly humiliation if we stay there. IF we were actively deterring terrorists while remaining I would be more inclined to stay but we seem to not be having much affect on Al Qaeda or the Taliban’s ability to plan and function (save for drones, which could be launched from Iraq or Pakistan).
Benson, ok. I think the guy is hard-wired to be a head person, a cool number. These are the qualities that won him the nomination and ultimately the Presidency. But I think he lacks something instinctual, some animal sense of how to connect on an emotional level, which would have helped him a lot through some of these recent problems.
We cannot withdraw from Afghanistan, and that is what is bugging President Obama. His heart and his left flank tell him to withdraw, but his head tells him otherwise. Recently it has been confirmed that there is over $1 Trillion in strategic mineral reservese there. To pull out and leave this country in the hands of Al-Quaeda/Taliban sympathizers is an inviation to disater. Symbolically, it would be a huge win for Al Quaeda too.
Eliot Spitzer, a man with no shame.
Nice ballad, Dibs.

Also, today Iran said they have triple the amount of enriched uranium found by the UN in April.
remember the good old days – when US Gov’t was trying to engage the Taliban… look before 9/11.
benson, when you and I are in our 80s or 90s, the strategic minerals of Afghanistan will still all be in the ground.
