The President hasn’t exactly been accomodating in granting the General his requests. It is telling that the General was quoted as being shocked at the level of the Commander in Chief’s lack of “engagement” in the war. He took 4-5 months to approve a troop surge.
The President has never run an enterprise on any large level. He’s an academic and may be victim to his inexperience in dealing with problems on a practical level.
He may be intellectualizing the process too much and to the country’s detriment and his own.
One more point. Almost since the day President Obama took office, his administration has been breaking the Nato allies’ chops that they are not pulling their load in Afghanistan. Recently they have been stepping up their efforts there. Once again, to suddenly announce: “sorry, we changed our mind, we’re pulling out”, would destroy US leadership in the world at a time when countries like Russia and China are seeking to fill any vacuum that we may create.
