  1. There were stories all over the news yesterday about the Afghan warlords getting tens of millions of dollars from the U.S. to ensure safe passage.

Like wasder said, it’s totally uncontrollable. We are in a situation that is even more foreign to us than it was in Vietnam.

  2. “s there like any long season where some over-hyped sports contest isn’t going on….it is the whole month of soccer, or NCAA or world series, or superbowl or stanley cup or winter olympics or summer olympics….”

    You forgot Wimbeldon.

What’s the difference between cockiness and douchebaggery?

Please forgive me, but I do think that these terms PRIMARILY relate to the male half of the human race and roughly translate as follows: Cockiness is a state of being characterized by a kind of hubris, an over confidence or sense of invulnerability which has some relationship to true competance or mastery. This CAN occasionally be attractive in very small doses. Douchebaggery on the other hand shares some of the obnoxiousness connected with cockiness but is mainly characterized by anti-social behavior and severe wannabe and insecure thinking.

  4. There is nothing in the history of Afghanistan that suggests that this region is controllable on an ongoing basis by any western power. I would personally shit can McChrystal, with a clear statement of rationale on chain of command, and appoint somebody with a bright idea for how to remove ourselves from this debacle while maintaining drone stations somewhere as that is the only tool that seems to have any positive impact for US foreign policy.

  5. From a tactical perspective, this is a gift for Obama. He is seriously suffering from the perception of weakness brought on by the spill and horrible media coverage. Assuming McC is not truly nuts, Obama can allow him to twist in the wind, grovel, offer to resign, etc. He can fire him or not. Just take his time and take charge.

  6. hey, what is all this talking about me? I brought up a real question. How can people follow all these sports things and think they are all that exciting and important?
Seems like goes on all year. Never ending finals seasons.

I didn’t say I didn’t like Law and Order…just never saw it. And I like bars and drinking just don’t like that neighborhood overrun by them and drive other businesses out (and don’t like the noise, food in backyard gardens that draw rats).
And riffraff is fine as long as stay in ParkSlope.

  7. People who speak to reporters, especially the “popular press” are going to find out the hard way. At the very least they will be misquoted. Most of these so called “journalists” have an agenda they are writing to and will slant thnings in that direction.
