  1. I really admire a person who has the courage of his convictions. I admire tremendously someone who has the passion for what they believe that they will defend it. I really like it that Benson CARES that much. That is a noble quality. And I don’t think that it is wrong to point out when one feels that another is saying something offensive. However, I think we need to be careful, to try not to be crushing to people personally when we do that. Why bring out the nuclear weapons? Why assume that the person is engaging in a mean, purposely disrespectful act? Why assume that? Why win the battle and lose the war? Offered with affection….

  2. “World’s 50 best restaurants list released

    6 in New York”

I went to #9 (Arzak, in San Sebastian, Spain) with an uncle in 1994. I was living in Madrid at the time and he was traveling around France and Spain with a second cousin of mine who had AIDS. Sort of a farewell tour for my second cousin, who didn’t make it long after that. My uncle (rest his soul) was all character. Former Navy submarine captain, brash, loudmouthed, walked with a walking stick (not because he needed it, he just liked having a walking stick). He always wore a Panama Hat. I remember being honestly afraid that he was going to buy me a hooker as some kind of a welcome to manhood. He didn’t.

When I met them at the hotel in San Sebastian at 10 in the morning they were making pastis cocktails. The full treatment with the slotted spoon and the sugar and the water. We had a few cocktails and left to walk around the city and get lunch at Arzak. The restaurant had been written up in the NY Times a couple of months earlier but the owner (Mr Arzak) had no idea. We showed him the article (my uncle had clipped a copy) and he was so thrilled that he gave us drinks from his personal stash of a liqueur made from berries that grow only in the mountains of Basque country. We went back for lunch again the next day, and Mr Arzak gave us more of the liqueur.
