  1. Slopey, I read Nixonland which I thought was a great book. One thing that I came away with from that book was that Nixon managed to snap the populist connection to the Democratic party by substituting the economist interest of workers for a populist cultural message (moral majority). He managed to use the fear of the more radical anti-war and violent fringes of the Democratic party and a deep seated anger of the south at Civil rights measures which were “imposed” by courts as a tool to break apart the Democratic party. The author paints a picture of Nixon as a brilliant, cynical, calculating (and lying) politician.

Re the Tea Party, I think they would probably fit more into the disaffected, frightened, ordinary people whose Nixon courted, and whose fury at “elites” could be manipulated away from their own true economic interests to culturally identify themselves with something which is more symbolism than anything else. (Oh, God, was this a good idea writing this??? Not having all afternoon to fight????)

  2. “But you’re going to smell worse later for that.”

Nope. I eat beans all the time. At least one meal a day is bean salad or bean soup. Sometimes I open a can of black beans and pour on some tabasco sauce and just chow down. You only get smelly if your system isn’t accustomed to processing beans. I’m basically immune.
