  1. This may be my last communication before the madness takes over and I turn on the TIVO’d “American Stories” and watch it over and over with the little Jackals.

Wow, lechacal, I promised myself to work hard today, but I lived in Kansas City for 2 years (working for energy company there), I can relate, but too bad you didn’t have a guide. Go to W 39th Street west of Main and there are a bunch of ethnic restaurants there – middle Eastern, Japanese (good actually) and my favorite — a pizzeria named DA Bronx, where you can get awesome pizza by the slice made by people from THE BRONX. I used to go there and the people were so nice to me, so solicitous to me in my homesickness.

Also, re church, I used to go to Annunciation parish near Main, which had the most stunning singing I ever heard. Probably 40 people, half of them men (never see THAT in NY) singing everything from Mozart to gospel. I joined and that was the most wonderful thing of my time there. Also, Kansas City is known for its urban design and tons of cool arts and crafts bungalows and the most urban art in the country — they have a great arts school and one of the best museums for Asian/Chinese art outside of China (Yale trained curator had serious cash during the depression to buy art and got jaw droppingly beautiful ceramics and paintings and furniture. Wow, I wish I knew you were going…..

  2. Jackal,

I spent a month or so in SW Kansas a long time ago. I think I had the same “don’t fry it” nightmare. Often the dinner choices came down to chicken fried steak or chicken fried chicken. With heavily battered onion rings on the side. Usually frozen peas and some potatoes for veggies. I suspect you’ll be coming back a vegan.

Are you on your x-country drive or is this something else? What tunes were/are in heavy rotation for the drive?
