  1. “I missed all of the deabte about the healthcare reform,so I’m catching up. I think the bill is a disaster, in that it creates a new entitlement, when we cannot afford the ones already in place, namely Medicare and Social Security.”

Hey benson, as things exist I’d agree. Of course every other advanced country in the world can, so it’s a matter of getting our priorities straight. Maybe some benefits adjustments, some modest tax increases, and the realization we can’t be the policeman or the bank of the world, would go a long way.

  2. Arkady is right, Legion, all of those agencies have been losing money forever, and health care hasn’t been put into operation yet, so blaming it is just sour grapes. If the mandate existed to fix any of the above, when the other party was in power for years and years, they could have done so. They didn’t. So don’t blame this administration for the post office or anything else that doesn’t work. None of the programs belong to one party, they are there for the entire country.

And sorry, maybe a paperclip costs less than 44 cents to make, but a box of paperclips does not, besides which, all of those products are made in China anyway, and do we really want to go into the wonders of Chinese manufacturing, and the implications therein? Apples and oranges to the discussion at hand.

Pete is right too, UPS can decide that delivering to Nowhere, Utah can only be done twice a week, in order to still make money. The post office has to deliver daily, whether it is profitable or not. And you can bet their elected officials are going to insist on it, also whether it is profitable to the USPS or not, righty or wrongly.

  3. snappy, arkady and denton,

of course I’m being hyperbolic in my condemnation of the baby boomer generation as a whole.
it is only a method to get an arm around the idea that things as a nation have declined in general. This is not my subjective idea , it is borne out by the fact that the generations coming into their own after the baby boomers have less to look forward to as a standard of living.

There is a reason for this.

True it is not just the baby boomer’s but they being the largest sector of our population and the sector with the greatest wealth in history, have to answer in some way.

    Snappy,
to describe these pertinent ideas as whining misses the point. It is people like us who discuss the problems who can at least become informed and vote in the representation to make things work.

    Arkady,
I don’t blame the Obama administration any more than I blame the Bush or Clinton administrations. One can list mistakes that all have made. My problem comes with the lack of straight forward decision making and logic that is being exhibited by all. Why do we study history at all if we doom ourselves to repeat the same mistakes?

  4. “When the fixes are straight forward and based on common sense.” – really, I expect more from you.
Always been wishful thinking, that there are simple answers to complex problems. And the world is much more complex. And if you think things were wonderful in olden days, looking thru rose-colored glasses.

  5. i think the new generation of baby boomers (the kids born from 2006 – 2026) are actually going to be THE WORST GENERATION EVER!

i do not look forward to getting old. the world is too scary of a place. even tho im not a fan of nature, part of me wishes i could shrink myself with a ray gaun and live like a gnome in the forest.

  6. Folks;

I missed all of the deabte about the healthcare reform,so I’m catching up. I think the bill is a disaster, in that it creates a new entitlement, when we cannot afford the ones already in place, namely Medicare and Social Security. It is ironic that last week, a few days after its passage, we as a nation reached a new point: for the first time in our history, Social Security is paying out more than it is taking in. Just WAIT until the mass of Baby Boomers start retiring. Moreover, I think the bill does precious little to contain costs.

If anyone has the time, I would strongly recommend that folks read this article:
