Pete, I have a caveat. I only have 2 nieces, so I tend to be more generous with their gifts. For their birthdays, I give them $10 for every year, and for big occasions (like high school graduation, Bat Mitzvahs) I give $500. Part of it admittedly is bribery (or a downpayment on my elder care) since I’m going to need one of them to take care of me when I’m old(er). If I had 13 or 14 nieces and nephews, $300 might be pushing it, but then again I’d have a much larger pool to take care of me.
Gem, I like your style, so many friends of mine didn’t really enjoy themselves because they were too busy making a good impression on the in-laws.
Cgar, I went there on Saturday. I enjoyed the hip-hop and the interior was nice. Did you get the jamocha shake by any chance? I didn’t taste any coffee flavor in it 🙁

I had a wedding with about 150 guests, 9 piece orchestra, open bar, three tiered wedding cake, etc in the Grand Ballroom of the Belmont Hotel in Chicago in 1990. It cost somewhere around $5,500.

not all cultures do the cash bit
I just had lunch with the Mongolian Situation. I’m sure he’ll audition and be cast. We went to Arby’s in the old Gage & Tollner space. Nice space. Doesn’t look like they touched the old place much. Neither of us had their famous roast beef, but the Goat Club Sandwich was quite tasty.
Jessi – it cost only $75 to clean and the stain TOTALLY came out!
frankly I didn’t get upset about it at the time – I was like oh well what can you do!
plus all the Pictures were done with at that point, so I ONLY wanted to dance
I realized at my own wedding I did nothing but dance
if you wanted to wish me well -you had to get on the dance floor and find me to talk – I was a bad bride as I didn’t go around to each table and thank people
but I did try doing that at the cocktail hour
“if you are a native New Yorker (whether or not you are middle class or have loads of dough) you already know that it’s customary to give cash at the wedding reception and not a physical gift”
It is? I’m a native New Yorker and I never heard this. Then again, I eschewed the big wedding in favor of putting a down payment on my house.

Pete, I’m with DH at the $300 gift level. I give $150 for Bar / Bat Mitzvahs.
DH, if YOU feel old, I’m going out casket shopping this afternoon!!!
