  1. Street smarts? rob? He can’t find Union Hall from his apartment around the corner. Needs to ask directions here 3x before the event. Ellis — right on 5th Ave? directions. Venues on Smith Street near Carroll? directions. 7th Street near 3rd Ave? Directions. I like rob, but no way, I’m not entrusting my daughter to rob to pick up street smarts. She’ll lose the few she’s got.

  2. Another trip I would highly recommend is to Fort Tilden, which is on the Rockaway Penninsula. It is between Riis Park and Breezy Point. It is a former harbor defense fort that has been turned into National Recreation Area. It is a fantastic place for hiking. It has been returned to its natural environment, which consists of wild sand dunes with brush, the likes of which you won’t see unless you go all the way out to Hither Hills State park on the eatern end of Long Island. Plus, you are right on the ocean. It is a large park, so you can spend the whole day hiking there.

It is not directly reachable by mass transit. There are two ways you can get there: a) car or b) take your bike onto the subway and take the “B” Brighton line to the Sheepshead Bay station. From Sheepshead Bay, take the bike path that starts at the Knapp Street entrance to the Belt Parkway. You can take the bike path over the Gil Hodges bridge (which gives you a WONDERFUL view of Jamaica Bay and then Fort Tilden is right there.

Also, across from Fort Tilden is a little waterfront community called Roxbury, which has its own volunteer Fire Dept. (even though it is in NYC) and a small Catholic church that looks like a cottage.

  3. Montrose, thanks for that. I’m really grateful for all of the insight people have given me.

As for riding the trains; the Champs have been on the subways I’m sure as much if not more than most kids in New York their age (including mornings and evenings with me this week). We take them all the time to museums and other places of interest throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn, but, as I said, it’s almost always underground. If it’s above ground, it’s just for a short time or routes that they’ve often traveled, like to the Southern parts of Prospect Park or on the 7 train to Queens or the N train to the Aquarium. Between that and their interest in the Transit Museum, they’ve already become quite proficient in learning the various lines and routes.

  4. Biff, benson’s suggestion of City Island is also a good one, though summer is probably a better time for it. Snappy, Kens and I are planning a summer field trip to City Island if anyone wants to join us – just make sure to get your permission slips signed.

  5. “Jamaica Bay is edenic!”

Maybe just a bit of hyperbole.

    DIBS,

    …um, not so much,
I saw a naked woman eating an apple there once,
of course the burly boyfriend with the
flannel shirt wasn’t too happy that I disturbed
    their picnic.

  6. A few odds and ends from yesterday,

    1. Good luck, CGar. I hope it all works out. It’s a good thing you moved forward when you did.

    2. I may be responsible for any allegedly unauthorized use of +A. I heard Noki say it that way and liked it and I posted that I would start posting it as +A. I don’t recall cobble inventing or adopting it, and I believe it came to my mind’s eye independently, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t seeop into my consciousness through her earlier use(for you IP lawyers and serious Beatle fans, you may note the similarities here with George Harrison’s defense and, I believe, Billy Preston’s testimony, in the “He’s So Fine”-“My Sweet Lord” plagiarism litigation). I will forbear on +A until cobble returns. PLUSA it is, for now.

  7. Well, I don’t have my own crotchfruit but I’ll borrow my sister’s for the Governor Island trip. I will be bringing the goat as well. Will they let me on the ferry with a goat?
