  1. Oh, and I’d love to go to Gov’ner’s Island. I was there only once, for my college roomate’s wedding. She married a Navy officer in the chapel. It was really wonderful. I wanted to wander around avec camera, but couldn’t, as I was in the wedding party.

  2. Yo, Goat Boy! Definitely planning on Governors Island this summer. Cobble and BH took the ferry from Fulton Landing and rode their bikes around the island. They packed a lunch, but said there are food vendors – apparently great jerk chicken – on the island.

  3. Biff, the 4 train to Woodlawn has a long ride above ground, but not too exiting for kids after it passes Yankee Stadium. At Kingsbridge Road they can see the side and roofline of NYC’s largest Armory, then further up, at Fordham Road, parts of Fordham U, then further up, Lehman College. At the end of the line at Woodlawn, you could take them to walk around in Woodlawn Cemetary, final home of many famous people, or over to Van Cortlandt Park. I used to live up there, but really haven’t wandered around since I left, a long time ago. There may be nice restaurants now, near Montefiore Hospital. Another subway excursion to the North Bronx could be on the D line to the Botanic Garden and the Bronx Zoo, all great things to do in the spring/summer.

I think having them ride on the train like that DOES teach them some street smarts. Plus, they can learn subway manners, like not swinging around on the poles and running around, keeping feet off the seats, making room for seniors, pregnant women and the disabled, and not standing in the doorway. If you can do that, you will have rare and amazing children, unlike many. It will definitely be a case of do as I say, not what everyone else is, or is not, doing.

  4. Jamaica Bay is edenic! Really wonderful. And, if it’s a sunny day, even at this time of year it’s not uncomfortably cold. A friend of mine used to lead field trips there for a bio class she taught at NYU & I joined them – now is the beginning of some bird migrations.

  5. Legion, re: the Broad Channel pics…I’m constantly amazed at the remarkable variety and contrasts in neighbourhoods throughout Brooklyn. It’s like traveling to another world going from Brownstone Brooklyn to The Rockaways.

Noki, I’m definitely in for a trip to Govs Island. Maybe we should do an all out PLUSApalooza family picnic day. Although having all of our ragamuffins around might disuade Rob from wanting to attend, which I wouldn’t want to happen…notwithstanding the fact Rob mentioned before that he thinks he would get along quite well with the Champs after I mentioned one time how they were pointing and making comments about a couple of little people they saw in our neighbourhood once.

  6. Legion, tech was great when you went there. was OK when I was there. if that downward trend persisted, it should be a “regular” (vs. specialized) school now

    M4L,
During the last 10 years they’ve done some awesome things,
a billionaire alumnus donated the football stadium off Fulton St. and another donated like a million for super computer/robotics research.
They’ve redone the enormous auditorium to it’s former glory
(2nd only to Radio City) and the standards have increased for admissions, they were getting a bit slack there.
