  1. “paradox that union clout with Democrats has increased ” –
what you been smoking? any union influence (which by the way is positive influence ) on gov’t is on the wane and is minimal for all parties. You wingnuts just think that anything that benefits workers is bad for big business.

  2. “the only thing i would do is possibly marrying a rich immigrant who needs a greencard for money. but how does one even get into that or find such an arragement? (im being serious btw)”

Rob/dibs: There are plenty of these arrangements. Back in the early seventies when it was cool to do it (and easy) I had a whole separate identity set up and wanted to use it to cash in like that. Mrs D wouldn’t go for it cuz she figured I would want to get some more of the marriage bennies. They used to pay 5-10k, so it wasn’t the rich ones. It was the one that paid 5k to get smuggled in by a mule and now they wanted to get legit.

However the INS is up to these and it’s not as easy as it used to be. You’ll have to set up house together and endure several home visits.

I could see rob and his new Guatemalan honey, one night maybe she wants to snuggle up and get him off the beanbag.

  3. It’s astonishing to me that someone sitting behind a desk needs to be part of a union. They have a job for life and don’t get the pleasure in contributing to their healthcare or retirement costs like us private sector folks. And GTD raises to boot!

  4. tybur6,

I think I’ve posted this before, but I’ll bring it up since you mentioned it and somebody on the forum was asking about it.
It seems to me that one can still make a smart move in NYC real estate being young and single since you have the advantage of not worrying about schools and children.
Buying a multifamily in a neighborhood like Bushwick-BedStuy-Crown Heights gives you massive tax advantages and location and ownership at the same time.
you could live rent free with the right move.
of course you’d have to deal with tenants, but it’s a trade off for a few years while you make your next big move.
ideally a 4 family in the 700-900range to avoid the rent stabilized/rent control issues, but it’s doable even with a 6-8 family.
you’ll need the 20% down for a commercial loan though, but it’s not 3Mill.
