  1. Gee all this chat and no mention of celebration?
BTW, today is National Data Privacy Day. Woohoo!
(in 2009, both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives recognized January 28th as National Data Privacy Day).
So how will everyone be celebrating?

  2. “If you were agreeing with me, CarGar, please re-write! :)”

    I rarely disagree with you, eS-I-L! 😉

No, I’m in self-centered mode this morning, so I was posting about “me” again!!

  3. My initial impression was that he was trying reeeaaaalllly hard to look cool, unruffled and confident about his/their message and that his opening joke about his boys fell flat.

Next I thought they must have really scrambled to rustle up the only African American and Asian Republicans they could find to fill the two seats that would be in camera view at all times.

And Kens, nope. Already watched it. Together! It. Was. FABULOUS.

  4. “Free” anything has to be paid for by someone. Just a reallocation of resources.
Same for government sponsored job creation schemes.

“The people calling for lower taxes and less regulation are crazy.”
People always want tax rises for others, but not to pay more themselves. And if anyone thinks they don’t pay enough taxes – just send a check to the US Treasury. They’ll cash it.

  5. “They just want to be free to rob, steal, and cheat the rest of their countrymen.”

    Mopar;

Yes, that is exactly what I want. Thank you for summarizing my position, and the excellent dialogue.

  6. I’m sorry to have posted and disappeared earlier. No sooner did I post than my boss (who is the epitome of Sigourney Weaver in Working Girl) summoned me. Thanks for all your comments. You guys really nailed it.

My gut is telling me to take it.

It’s the same group I interviewed with last August, but not the same position I turned down then. What’s changed is that the writing on the wall here is much clearer to me now, and I think the chances of getting a permanent position with the Death Star are much better now than they were then. Had I gotten any new work or responsibilities here since last June (aside from the OT), I’d probably say the work is comparable, but the new firm is clearly a better firm, so I’m guessing the caliber of work is also better.

It’s not that my boss here doesn’t think I’m “working out”. She’s now reporting to someone who was her equal before the merger, and she got a title demotion in the process. She’s told people that I have a better resume than she does. I agree that she’s afraid for her own job, so she’s threatened by me; she’s afraid that as people get to know me and my work, when push comes to shove they’ll pick me over her, and she’s not going to let that happen. It turns out she lied and told my new boss that I had no time to do work for him, without ever asking me; I only know this because I ran into him, told him I had “excess capacity” and volunteered to take on more work, and he told me “That’s NOT what she said”!

Unfortunately, a package here is not a factor. I’ve only been here 2 years and have zero seniority. This is my transition job from private big firm law practice to in-house legal-compliance. But I’m really glad I took this job because it made that transition possible, and it was a great port during a very bad storm. That I survived here in the face of 150,000 people fired amazes me – in fact, the only reason I’m still here is that my old boss took a package.

The other pros are that I can commute over the Brooklyn Bridge every day without having to take a subway. And I won’t have to move to Jersey City in March with my current group.
