  1. CMU and Stevie, a part of my job (and my departments) is figuring out whether we can produce something overseas or in-house (U.S. and maybe Mexico/Canada). Trust me, we really try to have products produced here but with unions and factories here, it’s just financially not possible. Just to give you an idea in perspective….If I were to buy a Samsung LCD TV now in BestBuy made in Malasya, I would pay around 1,200. If that same Samsung was produced here in a union factory, I would pay about 8,000 for the same TV which most likely would actually be lower quality of production or about the same quality but no way better. Now my sales would go down by about 80% cause I would barely sell enough 8K TVs. Because of that, I will lay off 80% of my workforce (marketing, design, finance, HR, engineering) and hire 80% more machine workers for the factory so my headcount will be about the same. Now….guess who makes more average salary, a marketing associate (I am not even talking management role) at my company or a average machine worker at a factor in the US??? Trust me, it’s simple economics when it all comes down to it. If you come to any of our meetups, I would gladly tell you my industry and show you the numbers broken down. You hardly will be able to argue FACTS that are on paper right in front of you.

  2. Theodore Dalrymple has turned into a one-note act but he described these issues very well in his book “Life at the Bottom: the Worldview That Makes the Underclass.”

    A doctor, one short point he makes is when a murderer describes how the stabbing death he is incarcerated for happened: “The knife went in.” As in, unfortunately these things just happened, go figure.

  3. I love the rich and ‘successful’ telling those who aren’t that poverty doesn’t exist in America – and that everyone had a fair shot at getting a piece of the pie.

    Yeah, please put down your crystal balls there Masters of the Universe(aka lucky). We know you work hard, just admit that the rest of us do too (some much harder). Any honest business person will admit that success is 40% hard work and 60% right place, right time.

  4. >>But what is true is that people from “everywhere” “all socioeconomic levels” and the most utter levels of poverty HAVE gotten the pie, and large pieces of it too.

    Where are the statistics to back you up? How come the gap between the rich and poor is the widest since WW 2?

  5. you people make my brain ache sometimes.

    so i was at wendy’s for lunch (just a small chili) but i bought a book of coupons, 10 coupons for a free frosty!, for only a buck! that’s 10 cents per frosty! i know youre supposed to give these coupons out to kids on halloween but i dont think there’s a wendy’s in brooklyn and im thinking that park slope parents might snub their noses if they see their kids getting a free frosty coupon. . the dollar spent on it did go to a good cause however! actually do kids go trick or treating in nyc. i swear ive been here like over 8 years and i dont recall ever seeing a trick or treater.

  6. Montrose;

    Have you somehow set yourself up as the monitor of my behaviour on this thread?

    It was logical debate, Montrose? Yes, StevieB’s “your kind” statement was certainly logical.

    Cobble’s remark to Legion et al. was certainly logical.

    I’ve made my statement regarding CMU’s “patriotism” remark, and he explained himself. Moved on.

    Keep trying, Montrose, but I’m not taking the bait.
