On the garden level of an 1850s row house, this one-bedroom unit still has a marble mantel in place as well as more modern amenities. Central air is included in the rental price and there is access to laundry in a separate mudroom.
The row house at 236 Dean Street sits within the Boerum Hill Historic District. According to the designation report, it is one of a row by builder Thomas Skelly. The transitional Greek Revival/Italianate house has a red brick facade with brownstone lintels, a brownstone front door surround, and a bracketed cornice. The iron fence along the sidewalk can also be seen in the circa 1940 tax photo, although there appears to be a different gate.
Ads from the early 20th century show the row house was a rooming house for decades; it is now set up as a two-family. This garden unit has a street-facing dining room, a galley kitchen, and bed and bath at the rear. It is a slightly quirky layout with that bedroom and bath only accessible via the kitchen.
The living room has the Greek Revival-style marble mantel. There is also wainscoting and two windows.
A blue and white checkerboard tile floor gives a nice punch to the kitchen. There are dark cabinets, butcher block counters, a white tile backsplash, and white appliances. Those appliances include a dishwasher.
Closet space is confined to the bedroom, but there are three. The bedroom has wall-to-wall carpet and a wall of exposed brick painted white. A door leads out to the rear yard and access to the mudroom, which, according to the floor plan, holds the full-size washer and dryer as well as a utility sink.
The bathroom has a shower and black and white scheme that includes white subway tile on the walls with thin black accent tiles.
According to the listing, the windows are new and the kitchen and bath were renovated.
Corcoran’s Betty Lee has the listing and the rental is priced at $3,800 a month. Worth the ask?
