DIBS, are you seriously pointing to Oprah Winfrey as proof that no social welfare or even labor regulations are needed because everyone is self-made.
KENS, not financially possible? Two words: American Apparel.
m4l: you not getting into MIT because you did not work hard enough = everyone else that didn’t go to college or otherwise advance themselves the way the wanted must be because they didn’t work hard enough– did i get that right?
k…this is the last thing I’m gonna say on this subject…
Doing great things for one’s self does not necessarily involve becoming a millionare a la Oprah and sports stars. That is rare and we a all know it. When I taught high school, I always told my kids that there is honor in EVERY job that legal and allows you to support yourself and a family should you choose to have one. Not everyone will be filthy effing rich. What everyone does deserve is good food, shelter, medical care, safety, etc. If you manage to get that by being a doctor, lawyer, plumber, car mechanic or janitor it’s all good.

it is not the buying of foreign goods that is unfair. what is unfair is exporting of jobs and the rich benefiting inordinately from their stock holdings along with dividend tax cuts but that money did not come back into the economy in the form of job re training or the creation of new and dynamic industries. That is what is unfair. The rich took the money and kept it. Some bought brownstones in Park Slope.

Boy, you really like to beat your head against the wall don’t you.
First of all, it’s a capitalistic economy. benson covered the job thing already…it’s a global phenomenon.
Secondly, regarding “new and dynamic industries,” there are more industries/businesses/technologies created in the US than anywhere else on earth.
The rich don’t just “keep” their money. The INVEST it. I invested money in Bed Stuy and people benefitted…the seller, the people I hired to work on the place, the resturants I patronize, the car service I take.
If you don’t understand capitalism then, fair enough.
there is a difference between humanism and an assumption of less ability.
be careful how little ability you ascribe to your fellow man.
we are all created equal, or at least it is one of the foundation principles of this nation.
from what you are saying, we should assume less of people and perhaps set up a society in which everyone is taken care of.
Exactly what Brave New World was written about.
so tell us,
are you an Alpha or a Delta? in this society you want to set up.
Funny, legion- especially when you think that John Lennon was the ultimate liberal pinko commie 😉
I think what is so disturbing is how things that are for the common good are being labeled socialist or communist or marxist. No country can work as a nation without some degree of socialism. But today people throw the term around as though another Stalin is about to take over and suck up all the wealth to redistribute to peasants. This country doesn’t work like that, will never work like that. If a public option is socialism, so is maintaining roads, or an army or system of law. I think socialism is a way of fearmongering without thinking. The town Hall meetings on health care are but an example.
>>I really can’t believe that you’re a writer. You have no ability to comprehend what I wrote, do you.
i am a writer; not a reader. LOL
the rich poor gap that is widening is a problem and may lead to more social unrests in this country (as unemployment picks up and people read about big bonuses on wall street) Think pitch forks and angry mobs in front of your bed stuy house, dave.
Ok…this is the last thing I’m gonna say on this subject…

Sorry DIBS – your examples are funny – let me give the dumbed down hipster version.
“there are rich people who used to be poor – look at oprah and basketball players!!”
you forgot rap stars.
