As far as the UFT? My sister and my brother in law are teachers. She in the Bronx. I dare any of you to walk into a Bronx classroom full of young toughs and teach them math. NYC teachers have some of the most difficult situations to work in, under one of the worst Bd.s of Eds in the country and most of them are dedicated, hardworking, and accomplished. I’d rather see money go to a good teacher than a stockbroker.
Anf for the record- I’m no lover of unions. They forced my father out of business because his workers did not want to join one. I just think the contempt regarding the men and women who belong to them is over the top.
Rob – There’s some merit in your argument but it speaks to only part of the medical fraternity. I agree there should be tort reform but I’m alive only because several guys w/ med school degrees did a lot of really important stuff for me. And there’s a significant population of med school students who struggle mightily to pay to go & then work in needy areas under-served by big-bucks research facilities.
So welfare is better than honest work Chicken?
The workers at Stella D’oro were making more like $18-$25, a barely livable wage in NYC.

bxgrl – the point is the stagehand salary isn’t a market rate salary, its purely due to union stranglehold.
This isn’t about what creative professionals earn in the market rate, the stagehands are out-earning those playing the darn instruments!
