  1. “The corporation has come to stay, just as the trade union has come to stay. Each can do and has done great good. Each should be favored as long as it does good, but each should be sharply checked where it acts against law and justice.”

    Theodore Roosevelt

  2. My dad worked for the MTA and worked HARD as a bus operator. 14 hour days. He doesn’t like the TWU because he thinks their in cahoots with the MTA. The biggest problem w/ unions today is their “friendliness” w/ management. Several former TWU heads were rewarded MTA exec positions in exchange for shafting workers. I wish your friends dad was here when we actually made things and working people making good money was the norm. Did your friend’s dad want to buy a house, send his kids to college? I don’t really believe that he thought he had it too good..

  3. chicken- do you honestly think the only reason prices go up and up is because of the unions? I don’t. It’s also because management and the heads of corporations wanted to make greater and greater profits so they could throw million dollar parties and buy $6000 shower curtains. There’s plenty of blame to toss around. The trend has been a greater separation of rich and poor in this country and studies say that worker salaries have not increased all that much, while salaries at the top have flown out of sight.

Unions are so convenient to scapegoat. They are far from the only problem- and I certainly agree they are a problem. And again- a Head stagehand and a Master carpenter do far more than “move props and equipment” around a stage. I’ve been looking for a job since I was laid off last December. Does anyone read these job descriptions? They wnat you to be responsible for everything, be able to perform at the highest level, have a great expertise and technical know how, be willing to work long hours and weekends for 8- 10 bucks an hour. No benefits. that’s why unions came into being.

  4. Maybe I’m way off base elitist robber baron venom-spitting hedge-fund cobra, but I’m guessing 90% of people you’d stop walking down 3rd avenue at lunchtime today would think $500k for being a stagehand is outrageous.

They’d also think that CEO’s earning millions is outrageous too.

  5. “Ridiculous. That is why so much trade show business goes to friendlier business environments.”

benson, I’ll be going to the javits later to catch PhotoPlus. See you there?

I don’t entirely get your anti-union antipathy. On the one hand, you bemoan landmarking cuz it ruins housing for the working class’ then you rail against the same class that would supposedly occupy it!

Some teachers are vastly underpaid, and many are overpaid. But you’re not allowed them to be paid according to talent. Bur agree the UFT should get busted up.
