Open Thread

Benson, regarding politics, I said “but with the Repub Party having been taken over by the rabid right, and with its blessing of many of the nut-job spokespeople, and fear of antagonizing said nut-jobs, it has totally lost its integrity and base. Let me know when sanity again rules there, and they come up with real answers, not slogans, and their spokespeople are not those either choose to believe the most absurd things about the President and the American people, or those who call for his death or downfall.”

I don’t see anything partisan about that, and most card carrying moderate centrist Republicans agree with me. Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly, Anne Coulter, and their ilk have taken over the party. The party is no longer about fiscal conservatism, or getting big gov’t out of people’s lives. It’s now about having big gov’t in people’s bedrooms, spending time worrying about what gay people are doing. It’s about trying to get back into power by scaring ignorant people who listen to no one but them, and telling them Obama isn’t an American, or that he is going to have “death committees” deciding whether or not to unplug Grandma. We more educated and sophisticated folk may laugh and say that no one with a brain actually believes some of their more outlandish stuff, but the fact remains that way too many people will believe anything these people tell them. Remember McCain and the woman who believed Obama was a muslim? And what’s wrong with being a muslim? But that’s another tale.

I consider myself open minded enough to judge what is bs from both parties, but I gotta say, right this moment, the Republican party is now so far out of touch with reality, it boggles the mind. The middle of the road folk, the Reagan Republicans and fiscal conservatives need to leave and form a new party that is untainted by the poison Rush, et al, have installed. Either that, or stand up and throw the far right out, because while they kiss up, or try to ignore them, in the hope of not alienating that powerful wing of the party, they are losing their chance of getting back into power for a very, very long time. I happen to think a viable opposition keeps everyone honest. That is not possible at the moment.
