  1. so what does it mean? the grand ave house is sold? I don’t care who lives across the street. I don’t care if they don’t like me. I like what I like and I’ll buy what I like & can afford.

  2. Bxgrl – Bronx was HORRIBLE inthe 70’s and 80’s
my mom(nyc school teacher) – um her first job placement was in the south bronx in 1974 – good god what that must have been like
she said the Black Panthers used to picket out front shouting at the teachers to go home whitey – meantime here is my mom 28 years old not a racist bone in her body honestly wanting to help the youth regardless of race and she had to deal with that upon entering the school

  3. K, I managed to survive without those things happening to me, but anecdotes are just those.

I loved being able to play actual sports instead of Nintendo, with real kids on the streets.

I loved being able to get in just about every cultural institution for free.

I loved being able to take the train to Yankee Stadium and actually be able to buy box seats and see the game without paying a fortune to some effin’ broker.

I loved being able to go to Times Square and see a double feature for a buck without seeing fukin’ Disney all over my town.

I loved being able to ride on the outside of buses and trains.

I loved being able to get what I need from quirky local merchants who lived in my neighborhood.

I loved playing stickball with my homies, and basketball, without some damn parents trying to stick me on a team with a coach and a uniform.

I loved smelling the bread from the Silvercup factory.

I loved smelling all the other factories in NYC and knowing that all the ‘poor’ parents actually had jobs in them.

I loved when the stuff I bought didn’t say ‘Made in China’.

I loved when any working shlump like me could live in any neighborhood they wanted.

I could go on, but you get my drift. There was good and bad, but all we ever hear about is the bad. NY was a thriving place then, always was, and always will be. A lot to be said for the good old days, but I’ve moved on and adapted.

  4. As an Oldie, I think everyone is losing sight of the fact that the world changes in ways both good & bad & the longer you live, the more changes occur. The purpose of this blog it seems to me is to serve as a place for an exchange of ideas &, as we saw last night, even when our basic philosophies may differ, the gumutlich is there. A totally homogeneous group would be boring. I’ve learned a lot of both practical & theoretical knowledge from many posts. Some of the ad hominem remarks are uncalled for but even they add to the spirit of the dialogue. Some days a neutral stimulus can just lie there while other days the same entry will start a bunch of vitriolic comments. I believe it has more to do w/ our own particular mood on a given day than w/ what specific issue is raised. I hope, Benson, that you find some tranquillity during your vacation & return w/ the general upbeat outlook you’re more typically noted for.

  5. “Yo, I just noticed that yesterday HOTD (385 Grand Ave) thread is gone. what happened? I hope it’s not sold yet cause I like to pick it up for cheap”

“what happened to the Grand Ave house post from yesterday?”
