That’s a good one, ditto. Many Jewish conductors, musicians, singers and audience members have done so. Not to mention all of the above who are not Jewish, but don’t condone racism or anti-Semitism of any kind.
When I was singing opera, I never did very much Wagner, as it wasn’t my fach, and most of it was just too heavy for my voice at the time, but I worked with lots of people who thought his music was the greatest thing since sliced bread, but they hated the man. They also had little tolerance for German musicians who collaborated or even just tolerated the Nazis. These were some of the most talented people of the century, like Herbert Von Karajan and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. It does get muddy.
ditto- re Wagner- I never could. And I have Jewish friends who love him. He makes my skin crawl no matter the art is above all things argument.
Oddly enough, while I can separate Carson from his anti-white attitudes. He did a great deal for his community.
What I can’t separate him from is his applauding the death of Yankel Rosenbaum – and as far as I’m concerned Rosenbaum could be anyone. If you applaud murdering innocent people, you’re a meaningless waste of a human being and it negates everything about you.
I would have to agree that female rappers like jean Grae and Bahamadia are great
so are the old school ones like Mc Lyte and Monie Love etc etc.
I wish people wouldn’t continue to blame record companies for the ills of artists spending the HUGE ADVANCE MONIES we give them on the wrong thing and then when the royalty checks stop coming (Because said artist wanted to fly in First or have a Mercedes Viano pick them up at the airport) conclude the record company effed them over!
That’s not how it works! – Get a better manager and not “your Man” or your college roomate to explain to you that if you want to use the Hot producer at the time all your advance money will go to paying that hot producer and if the album breaks even, you won’t get anymore checks – but if the album sells well – you will get a bonus plus your residuals and the label will be that much more willing to strike a new percentage deal on points off your album!!!!

I agree with you on this. Is it possible to separate Wagner’s music from his anti-semitism though? these things get muddy.

ENY- you are so right. But we also have to stop thinking people are flat pieces of cardboard. Take that story about ODB and how they rescued the little girl. The guy did a heroic thing- it shouldn’t be forgotten.

Hey Pitbull, 99% of the time I read comments on this site, I do not post. However, you said two things in two consecutive days that were so preposterous that I couldn’t help my weak self.
Beastie Boys “faux,” and “cheesy?” I love hip hop to death, and truthfully was never a big fan of BB. Yet, there is no question that they were pioneering. They are trend-setters who earned respect from everyone in hip hop, and will always be respected for what they did. And their first album was a classic.
Coming from a Foxy Brown fan, I guess your post makes some internal sense. You seem to not be from NYC, which is cool. Welcome. But really, perhaps you should aim for quality over quantity when it comes to commenting.
What, nobody hollers louder than I do around here when I think racism is wrapping its arthritic fingers around an issue on this blog. I’ve taken kudos for it, and I’ve taken heat. I don’t plan on changing to satisfy anyone’s expectations of what a black person should say or feel, I am just one voice, expressing one opinion.
And I do agree that black men have it worse than anyone else in society when it comes to profiling, being frisked, arrested and serving time.
And although I am not a man, I know what it’s like to have people nervous to have me walking behind them, or get in an elevator in a tony building, or be followed by security in a store. But you know what – I ignore them, because ignorance cannot be tolerated or fed into. So I go about my business because I know that I have as much right to the street, and to be in that elevator, or in that store. Carrying myself with pride and dignity is the best revenge. Working towards not having a world like that is the only solution.
