odb-defaced-0309.jpgThe Ol’ Dirty Bastard mural at the corner of Putnam and Franklin Avenues (originally painted by Vic Goldfeld for a documentary) was already repainted once after first being defaced in 2007; now, according to Bed Stuy Banana, it’s been defaced again: His face and the “Bastard” part of his name were painted over recently. “Angry church lady?” wonders BSB. “Or just not a hip hop fan?” GMAP

  1. Gee, What- did it ever occur to you you also described the Jewish experience? Oh, we may not have been hung from trees, but you could read up on the atrocities committed on us in pograms and in concentration camps. We are all injured people- every group, every person.

I’m not telling you to get over it but I am saying the more you dwell on the past, the more you live in it.

SO my question to you is – and I am actually paraphrasing something I heard Malcolm X brilliantly say about White people who hate Black people yet spend their summers on the beaches trying to get to look like them- why try so hard on Wall St. and in Real Estate to earn enough money to live like monied White folk (something I can’t manage to accomplish)?

Why aren’t you emulating your idol, Sonny Carson and be a community activist in Bed Stuy? It’s fine to bitch and moan about what’s been done to Black people, and worse- it’s all true. But what have you done for yourself and your people?

  2. What – so somehow I’ve managed to elicit from you something from your heart, not cut and pasted, not pulled from wikipedia, not written in texting language and, in your own way, eloquent.

    A miracle.

  3. MM, with all due respect, I’m sure ODB and the whole Clan (and everyone else who gets royally screwed) had great legal representation. Getting a contract that is considered “industry standard” is as good as you can hope for as an unknown. Hugely famous people (Prince, Madonna, U2) continue to wrangle with their record companies to this day, really only helped by the slight increase in power the writers and artists have thanks of the internet. No struggling artist hoping for a break is going to walk away from a contract and their one hope of recording, touring, reaching an audience. They hope they succeed enough to overcome crippling terms, or at least have a good ride while it lasts. And Troy… what about Rah Digga’s first LP?

  4. “But we also have to stop thinking people are flat pieces of cardboard. Take that story about ODB and how they rescued the little girl. The guy did a heroic thing- it shouldn’t be forgotten.”

    I completely agree.

“But you know what – I ignore them, because ignorance cannot be tolerated or fed into. So I go about my business because I know that I have as much right to the street, and to be in that elevator, or in that store.”

    Again, agreed.

“I agree with you on this. Is it possible to separate Wagner’s music from his anti-semitism though? these things get muddy.”

Another very good point. There are no easy answers here.

  5. “I am a child of Injured Humanity. I have 400 years of Slavery and 400 million of my Brothers and Sisters scattered around the world in the Diaspora . My Brothers was hung from trees and My Sisters was r*ped and treated like Second Class citizens….”

So am I, so are lots of us. That doesn’t give us a license to be a@@holes. It calls us to be better, smarter, stronger. It gives us inspiration, cojones, imagination and determination. It should cause us to rise above, not sink below. That history should call us to greatness, not mediocrity, not to just getting over, or getting ours.

  6. ODB was from Brooklyn, He lived on Lewis Ave.

I like that “Brooklyn Zoo” lyrics post East New York, But you got a couple of things twisted.

“I’m the one-man army ace on” should be “I’m the one man army, Ason” ODB also went by the name Ason Unique. Same thing for “Hey son, I keep planets in orbit”

“Energy Building taking all types of medicine” should read “Ithe G building…” as in the psych ward in Kings County.

  7. bxgirl…….Shirley Chisolm would do just fine as a mural.

So would murals of other more positive spoken word artist: Langston, Dunbar, Cullen..etc:

Better yet, how about a mural with the lyrics to “Lift Every Voice and Sing”

btw…why don’t somebody paint over the J.Z. ad over on Tillary Street. I’m waiting..

  8. “What I can’t separate him from is his applauding the death of Yankel Rosenbaum – and as far as I’m concerned Rosenbaum could be anyone. If you applaud murdering innocent people, you’re a meaningless waste of a human being and it negates everything about you.”

WHOA WHAO WHOA!!! When in the f**** I did that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This validates everything!!!!!!!!!! When did I applaud the death of Yankel Rosenbaum????!!!

That was very bad Bxgrl. You ask me a opinion on something and twisted around! Where did Yankel Rosenbaum come from?

I will never interact with you again…

    The What (Wow)

Someday this war is gonna end..
