According to a Brooklynian post, an early morning stabbing occurred outside of the Branded Saloon, at Vanderbilt and Bergen. Says the commenter: “Details are fuzzy, but it seems that there was some form of altercation between a dog-walker and a bar patron and bartender that left one person dead and the other hospitalized in serious condition.” So far, seems unclear if this was definitely a homicide. Anyone know more details? Update: One dead, one injured has been confirmed. (Both were employees of the Branded Saloon.) There is also one suspect in custody. There will be a candlelight vigil on Saturday night at the bar.

Maybe it’s just that gentrifiers are easier targets because it appears they pay little attention to their surroundings and aren’t as diligent about securing their belongings.
they also gladly hand over their belongings without putting up any kind of fight. then they blog about how urban they and how dangerous their new neighborhood is to all their friends back home. you can probably be wearing a business suit and walk up to one them, point to their phone or ipod, say gimme it, and they’ll hand it right over to you! the criminals KNOW this and take advantage of that fact. good for them.
that said, watch me get mugged this evening lol
*rob*
I’m not saying that the burglars and muggers are actually getting anything of value (and I agree, ishtar, I’m probably on the low end in terms of the value of my possessions vs. others around me, at least in terms of the electronic stuff), but the perception that people have more stuff makes it more potentially rewarding. And the prevalence of iPhones, etc., ups a lot of robberies into the grand larceny category.
This article (although it’s from 2007) gives you an indication of around what percentage of murders are random acts.
By FAR, more people who are killed know their killer.

How many of the murders are actually random acts of violence?
Kinda hard to cook the books on murders. It’s tough hiding bodies.
Yes, Herkimer. And if you read the article the allegations are about “cooking the books” on downgrading felonies to misdemeanors.
They aren’t cooking the books on the number of murders.
Go to http://www.nydailynews.com/ and search on “police cook books”. Article #1, from today.
They don’t have Bloomberg as mayor in Philly… The cops cook the books to make it appear safer.

So no additional details as to how this transpired???
