According to a Brooklynian post, an early morning stabbing occurred outside of the Branded Saloon, at Vanderbilt and Bergen. Says the commenter: “Details are fuzzy, but it seems that there was some form of altercation between a dog-walker and a bar patron and bartender that left one person dead and the other hospitalized in serious condition.” So far, seems unclear if this was definitely a homicide. Anyone know more details? Update: One dead, one injured has been confirmed. (Both were employees of the Branded Saloon.) There is also one suspect in custody. There will be a candlelight vigil on Saturday night at the bar.
Many times fires are set to cover up a murder, but also very often forensics do determine that the victims were killed prior to the fire being set. And people who are killed in what is classified an arson fire are considered murder victims as well. Unfortunately, a lot of fires in poorer neighborhoods are due to overloaded or faulty wiring (not many pre-war buildings have been rewired to handle all of today’s electronics), space heaters placed too close to fabric, and hot plates – much of which occurs due to the poor conditions in many rental buildings. I feel very sorry for the victim and his friends and family here, but it seems like one of those very rare occurrences where an innocent person does not know his killer and just runs across a psychopath, nothing really to do with the overall safety or dangerousness of the area.
When did Vanderbilt become Bed-Sty or Crown Heights? I guess it is considered Prospect Heights until blood is spilled on it then it’s instant Bed-Sty or Crown Heights.
This is awful. My heart goes out to family and friends.
And rob, it is really heartless to call a murder victim a loser because of the events leading up to this. You are constantly antagonizing people- I find it hard to believe you have never had a senseless argument in person… unless your wit and attitude are saved for the internet and you are just a giant pussy in person.
Murder a common occurrence in Bed-Sty and Crown Heights? Of course.
Murders can be hidden.
If an arson fire kills people, are those deaths classified as murders? I don’t think so.
There seem to be a lot of arson fires in Bed Stuy. Everything I hear makes it sound as if most of them are intended to harm or intimidate certain individuals – although it may be the children or the elderly who die. Every block seems to have at least one burned out house. The fire dept loves to be assigned to Bed Stuy because that’s “where the action is.”
REALLY glad to hear that Polemicist now lives in Manhattan. I would so not like to ever cross paths with him (her?).
A WSJ article:

Un-f*cking believable as to how this thing escalated. Over tangled leashes and a hand placed on the arm of the guy’s wife. That merits death.
I hope the jury takes one look at the pictures of the rat-dogs and photos of the dead/wounded victim and gives this guy whatever the maximum allows–it’s probably not enough even with the prior.
Anyone who walks around Brooklyn without a weapon is a fool.
It takes very little of your time to keep in shape and learn how to wield a push dagger or a cane that can be wielded as a weapon. Wielding a knife takes a bit more skill, but it’s not that hard.
Always assume any assailant is armed. Be ready to kill anyone who threatens to harm you. If you strike a near fatal blow, RUN and do not tell anyone what you have done, especially if you are white.
$17 and this dagger will take out any thug with one strike.

This cane can cause some serious damage, and keeps you at a distance from most thugs.

I own both, and ALWAYS carry the push dagger, even in my new hood in Manhattan.
My prayers to the victim.
