According to a Brooklynian post, an early morning stabbing occurred outside of the Branded Saloon, at Vanderbilt and Bergen. Says the commenter: “Details are fuzzy, but it seems that there was some form of altercation between a dog-walker and a bar patron and bartender that left one person dead and the other hospitalized in serious condition.” So far, seems unclear if this was definitely a homicide. Anyone know more details? Update: One dead, one injured has been confirmed. (Both were employees of the Branded Saloon.) There is also one suspect in custody. There will be a candlelight vigil on Saturday night at the bar.
ugh I had an entire response written but the blog logged me out. We really can’t know what the outcome would have been to the recent ups and downs with someone else as mayor…
Anyway, I joined this thread because I’ve lived in the area around the stabbing since the 80’s and I just don’t believe that the city is a safe as they’re telling us that it. The details of this incident are very sad and alarming.

Really feeling bad for the guitar player and the musician. Sounds like they were doing the standup thing and trying to stop the fight on the street.
Here’s a link to the NY Daily News reportage of the murder:

Witnesses told cops a couple and the off-duty bartender ran outside after hearing the dogs barking.
In minutes, the clash spiraled from a shouting match to violence.
The bartender, Chai Eun Hillmann, 42, was stabbed to death. And Daniel Hultquist, 35, a waiter who was playing guitar at the saloon, was slashed in the neck when he tried to intervene. Hultquist was in stable condition at Kings County Hospital.
“They’re arguing about whose dog can beat whose dog,” a witness told the Daily News.
A police source said the patron flew into a rage after someone made physical contact with his girlfriend.
Police are questioning a suspect at the 77th Precinct stationhouse in Brooklyn. No one has been charged.
“We are deeply saddened and hurt
That’s true, herimermaid. Like that rapist who was caught by another precinct and admitted to raping women. He even took the detective to each location. Turned out the precinct where most of the rapes occurred would drop the felonies to misdemeanor assult or something ridiculous. I might have the exact details a little mixed up, but This American Life did a story about NYPD quotas and stats massaging.
It was not a gay on gay murder. A staff member stopped by the bar during his off hours and tied his dog up in front. A man walked by with his dog and the dogs began to fight. The staff member came out and tried to break up the dogs…the stranger picked a fight with the staff member then drew a knife and killed the staff member and slashed another staff member who had intervened.
It wasn’t a drunken bar fight…the man is in custody.
“Especially not if Bloomberg is at the helm.”
Not sure what your problem with Bloomberg is, but he’s done a pretty great job of keeping this city afloat during a very difficult time. Continues to invest money in services, schools, parks, etc. He’s not perfect, but he was and is the best man for the job.
If the crackpot who ran against him had won, we’d be in deep doodoo right now.
I just want to send my consolations and best wishes to the victims and their families. It’s a very sad day.
Felonies also include rape and burglary. Those crimes are a lot more easily covered up than a dead body. My point is that there’s a lot of serious criminal activity going on that’s not accurately reflected in the stats which makes it SEEM safer. And that is just flat out wrong. We have a right to accurate statistics. I don’t necessarily believe that NYC is safer. Especially not if Bloomberg is at the helm.
