According to a Brooklynian post, an early morning stabbing occurred outside of the Branded Saloon, at Vanderbilt and Bergen. Says the commenter: “Details are fuzzy, but it seems that there was some form of altercation between a dog-walker and a bar patron and bartender that left one person dead and the other hospitalized in serious condition.” So far, seems unclear if this was definitely a homicide. Anyone know more details? Update: One dead, one injured has been confirmed. (Both were employees of the Branded Saloon.) There is also one suspect in custody. There will be a candlelight vigil on Saturday night at the bar.

  1. “A sign of gentrification, in that people have more valuable things to steal (i.e., the increase in grand vs. petit larceny and the jump in burglaries)? ”

I don’t know, babs. I guess I would be considered a gentrifier in socioeconomic terms, but looking around and basing things on material goods I’m pretty much at the bottom of the heap and my income is well north of the area median (I live in Crown Heights and I’m kinda cheap, too). I burglar would be totally disappointed if he broke into my apartment. Hell, sometimes I’m disappointed when I walk into my apartment after work.

Maybe it’s just that gentrifiers are easier targets because it appears they pay little attention to their surroundings and aren’t as diligent about securing their belongings.

  2. This from Branded Saloon, which I found here: http://www.brooklynian.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=59530

We are deeply saddened and hurt by the loss of our dear friend and co-worker Chai Eun J Hillmann who was killed last night in an act of needless and senseless violence. The attacker also stabbed another co-worker and dear friend Daniel who is in stable condition. We intend to come together as friends and family and as a community to show our outrage for violent crime in our neighborhoods. We ask that you keep Chai and Daniel’s family and friends in your thoughts and prayers.

We intend to have a candle light vigil in honor of Chai and to show our solidarity against violence on Saturday night at 8pm.

  3. It is still a very safe city, Herkimermaid…

500 or so murders in a city of 8.4 million people…

When you compare that to 350/400 murders in cities like Baltimore, St. Louis, Cleveland, Detroit, Washington DC, etc with less than a million people we are overall extremely safe. LA and Chicago are MUCH less safe than NYC.

  4. That’s the murder rate above – robbery is down about 10% but grand larceny is up 2% and burglary is up 13%. A sign of gentrification, in that people have more valuable things to steal (i.e., the increase in grand vs. petit larceny and the jump in burglaries)? Car thefts up too.

  5. Bloomberg on Letterman last night “this is one of the safest cities” in the States — yeah RIGHT. If you watch News 12 Brooklyn murders and shootings seem to be quite the regular occurrence in the Crown Heights / Bed-Stuy vicinity. It’s appalling and very scary that happened on Vanderbilt.
