rice-small-012811.jpgThe Local shares some terrible news today: the Rice location at 166 Dekalb Avenue will close this Sunday. This comes years after we found a Craigslist advertisement seemingly trying to sell the spot. The Local also reports the Dumbo location will remain open, and we gave them a call just to confirm. (It will stay open.) Bummer for Fort Greene residents.

  1. 4ForLess- I’m a former Manhattanite, so I don’t like to have to venture far. My general boundaries are Fulton St, DeKalb, Vanderbilt and on a sunny nice day, I can maybe trek to Myrtle. But I think Myrtle is really out of the way. Especially since there is retail space nearby me–just most of it is closed up shops or shops offering services that have little relevance to me (i.e. Tire repair or cigar bars.)

  2. The departure of Rice and Moe’s is endemic of two things:

-Most F&B establishments do not last more than 5-10 years. The final straw is when the lease expires and they can’t make P&L work with the rent increase.
-The area has changed significantly since these places opened and these places are still offering the same fare.

  3. Pretzel, how far (hood-wise) would you stray to outside of ft greene/clinton hill? Area could use some more retail options as I too prefer to walk to these spots vs driving to another hood.
