65 dikeman street red hook 22015

This three-bedroom, 2,400-square-foot Red Hook townhouse features wide-plank wood floors, tin ceilings, exposed beams, decorative mantels and vintage light fixtures. And there’s a big backyard, a deck and 2.5 baths. It’s close to Fairway, Ikea, two big parks and the waterfront, but the subway at Smith and 9th Streets is over a mile away. Overall, the rent seems high given the location and the condition of the house, which is over a century old and looks like it could use some TLC. Does the plaster peeling off the chimney over the bed take “rustic” too far, considering the rent of $5,500 per month?

  1. For a house in this condition and assuming that the tenants will also be paying: heat, hot water and the water meter bill, as is customary when renting a whole house, the rent is rather high.
For the owners sake lets hope whoever rents it does not call housing inspectors that will make all manner of housing violation write ups. A paint job, wholes in the floors between floor boards, drafty windows etc.

  2. It’s actually a very nice large house. The interior configuration was a little awkward the last time I was there (quite a few years ago), but for the most part, a family of 4 or even 5 could live quite comfortably.

  3. The rent sounds right — how many whole townhouses can you find on the rental market for that price, in any neighborhood? I’d almost rather rent that house, for its charm and its garden, than own it (considering the work it probably needs). Lots of desirable places are far from the subway, e.g. Willow Pl in Brooklyn Heights, Tiffany Pl in Cobble Hill West. What can ya do? Wait for the 61 bus, call a car, get a car, or walk 2000 steps.
