Rental of the Day: 1229 Dean Street
This floor-through apartment at 1229 Dean Street in Crown Heights, currently listed in the Brownstoner Marketplace, has a lot to recommend it. It has a truly stunning exterior, with plenty of interior details to match. We like all the wood trim, especially around the fireplace. The neighborhood is not “gay unfriendly”. Rob’s pronouncements on a neighborhood mean nothing, especially about a neighborhood that he has never once visited.
BH, that’s something you ask Rob on the “other” thread; dont hijack this thread
What is a moonface?
Rob, chill man. everyone here is shooting down the 1600. but then a free spending moonface could easily be sold by the architecture of the area cough up the 1600. I do see lots of moonfaces in this area – artistic looking ones too
I wouldn’t pay a penny over $1100 for this place.
Can I hear more about the neighborhood being very unsafe for LGBTs? I am on NY Ave and Park Place and haven’t felt unsafe ever, either as a queer woman or just as a person walking down the street. I know a lot of LGBT people of color who have moved to Crown Heights since they can no longer afford “lesbian mecca” of Park Slope.
I certainly wouldn’t call all parts of Crown Heights a ghetto (I am aware of gun violence as a big problem in parts of the neighborhood). My block feels pretty middle-class, predominantly African-American and Caribbean. Perhaps people who are used to young white faces on the block all the time would call this a ghetto, but I certainly don’t feel that way. Certainly the further east you go in Crown Heights, the poorer it gets. At the same time, calling this area “BADDDDDDDDDDDD” feels pretty off-mark and insensitive. I see fancy bikes locked on the block all the time and they don’t seem to get jacked or broken. Children’s Museum, Brower Park… Not trying to detract from real problems and urban blight, but also don’t want people giving the wrong idea on this site.
people saying 1600 for this in the middle of the hood (after hearing all the stories people in this thread have said and countless other ones people have said) are batshit insane. this is the reason why halfway decent neighborhoods wind up costing like 2500 dollars for a one bedroom cuz there are morons out there will to pay 1600 to live like this.

I walked down this block casing the neighborhood for another property a few months ago. Passed 2 blatant drug drops (giant wads o’ cash and brown grocery bags exchanged hands). Had 2 sets of police officers tell me to buy somewhere safer. Of course, I’ve had plenty of officers tell me to move out of Stuy Heights “or end up the victim of violent crime,” so I take all that with a grain of salt.
Still, I think 1600 is high but not too high.
i meant gay unfriendly, not un gay-friendly tho i guess both make sense
