We quite like this two-and-a-half bedroom rental at 428 3rd Street in Park Slope. The details and the layout are quite agreeable, and the kitchen looks pretty nice to us too (though Mr. B won’t like those new cabinets, we suspect). The price was reduced from $3,400 to $3,250 just a few days ago, a point that may not be too far off the mark.

  1. tybur, screw the haters who truly believe that if you dont make at least 100K that you should up and move to oshkos wisconsin or something. they are seriously deluded and mental in the head. believe me, im not going ANYWHERE no matter how high rents go. just be prepared to hold on tighter to your fancy electronic gadgets on the train and bar up your windows cuz this city has become completely economically unsustainable.

  2. “Is there not something in between “cheap” and “crazy expensive”??”

    Atlanta, GA
    Raleigh Durham, NC
    Portland, OR
    Portland, Maine
    Charlotte, NC
    Phoenix, Arizona (quite cheap now)

These are cities with moderate housing expenses (in the grand scheme of things). I’d rank Boston, SF, NYC, Seattle, Honolulu, Washington in the top tier…

Keep in mind that NYC was just ranked the 22nd most expensive place to live in the world. Not #1. Given that most people rate NYC as one of the world’s best cities, it’s actually a deal when you consider the high cost of living in those other 21 other cities.

It’s actually people like Rob who boggle my mind who seem to be here by default, don’t appreciate what the city has to offer but spends a sh8tload of money to live here for no apparent reason.

im an enigma, a bit of a masochist, and i don’t know how to drive nor do i plan on ever learning. plus my dog loves NYC, so that keeps me here. i have no problem paying high rents to give him a better quality of life. please let me enjoy my only form of good karma.

  4. Is there not something in between “cheap” and “crazy expensive”?? New York City is the latter… I have no problem with NYC being *more* expensive, it’s just gotten out of control. Expenses (and matching wages) just seem to have lost all contact with reality.

There’s a point where it’s not a healthy thing… ya know, where even the high-priced feedback loop can’t keep up.

I do enjoy that no one piped up and say, “No, $80,000 is a lot of money!” Funny.

  5. Yes, 11217, i was being a bit facetious. Not only the most to offer but more social services than anywhere else in the country as well, and probably more philanthropy than anywhere else in the world.

Most of the hospital services here aren’t here from their own profitability.

  6. But Dave, I venture to guess that many of NYC’s poor probably still appreciate this city for what it has to offer. It certainly is probably one of the easiest cities to enjoy yourself for free than anywhere else I’ve been. And that’s a true statement. So much to see and do for simply the price of a metrocard.

It’s actually people like Rob who boggle my mind who seem to be here by default, don’t appreciate what the city has to offer but spends a sh8tload of money to live here for no apparent reason.

Rather foolish to go around saying you hate NYC when it’s the most expensive city in the country. You’re basically announcing that you enjoy throwing money away.

  7. “Well, you know what you should do, Bucky? You should spend your entire work day, everyday in fact, lusting after real estate a civil servant like yourself will ever be able to afford. You should bitch, whine and moan until everybody else feels sad, too. Or at least feels pity.

    Yeah, that should work.”

I just saw a pig fly since it was 11217 who was the most polite on this issue. 🙂
