This four-bedroom home at 56 Cambridge Place, which was renovated back in 2005 and 2006, is now on the market as a rental. The exterior of the house was restored from a wreck and a sizable addition was put on at the rear. The result, as the listing points out, is a 4,600-square-foot home on a double lot with a driveway. Since Mr. B informs us that he knows the owner, we’re going to limit our own commentary on the interiors, other than to say that the main floor is very open-plan and the finishes are, not surprisingly given that it was a gut reno, all new. Asking price: $5,500 a month.

I qoute:
“The owner will retain the rights to use the basement, which has a separate entrance, as an office.”
He isn’t living in the damm thing, so unless the guy is a reall workaholic I don’t think you need to worry about making too much noise on a Friday night.
And I think the renovation looks pretty cool. Love the floors. I wish Corcoran had put up a few more pictures. Of course the anguished wails of B’stoners lamenting the sacrilegious desecration of what was surely a massive pile of dark and dingy Victoriana are totally predictable.
I for one give the guy props for bringing some light and cool design into a historic home. Not all of us want to live in a lovingly preserved wax museum.
I think the interior looks VERY unappealing. I don’t understand the double height ceiling idea – at all.
As I recall, the owner started a renovation blog on this site years ago – and then abandoned it. He also was involved in renovating Broken Angel – and then abandoned it. I had thought he was going to live in the house – but I guess he abandoned that idea.
The little shelf left in front of the 2nd story bay window is intriguing. Is it where one puts a naughty child for time out?
i like the open interior space and inside. but the neighborhood isnt so nice.
*rob*
I’ll make the necessary comments about the owner then: it’s a slumlord who thinks he has some sort of architectural talent. the interior looks like it was butchered. that piece of second floor left in the bay window is totally useless & defeats the point of cutting out that part of the second floor.
having him in the basement will either: a) not matter because proper maintenance of his rental properties is something he couldn’t care less about; or b) potentially allow him to have a lot of influence in the way the renters’ live. both are far from ideal.
brownstoner should be a trusted resource for brooklyn real estate. given the owner’s track record with other properties, I’m disappointed that Mr. B wants to ship this.
Huh. I’ve been looking at this for 3-4 minutes, and all I can come up with is fuck you.
Oh, and no thanks.
“Since Mr. B informs us that he knows the owner”
oh M. B just come out and say it.
It’s awful!
Okay, I kinda like it. You can work on the mezzanine while the kids ride scooters down below. And the price, while high, at least accounts for the square feet involved. Who cares if the landlord is in the basement? What, was your band going to practice down there?
tybur6, if electric heater, $1k?
