This four-bedroom home at 56 Cambridge Place, which was renovated back in 2005 and 2006, is now on the market as a rental. The exterior of the house was restored from a wreck and a sizable addition was put on at the rear. The result, as the listing points out, is a 4,600-square-foot home on a double lot with a driveway. Since Mr. B informs us that he knows the owner, we’re going to limit our own commentary on the interiors, other than to say that the main floor is very open-plan and the finishes are, not surprisingly given that it was a gut reno, all new. Asking price: $5,500 a month.

Rob,
What do you know about this neighborhood??? This house is on a wonderful block. I used to live around the corner and it’s a really lovely place. The house was a wreck, with a squatter inside, before it was sold–at auction I think.
Unless he’s stolen your bibles, some of you seem a bit extreme with the hate? I don’t know the owner, by the way, but considering you all are okay with 1K square feet floor throughs in this area going for $700K… why is renting this a bad deal? Isn’t it still cheaper than many mortgages?
This was the neighborhood haunted house for eons. I don’t think it even had a rear wall. I would circle the block several times just to avoid parking in front.
The developer definitely saved this structure which was on the verge of a tear down, and helped to enhance a really great block. The interior choices are odd to me, but It looks like he tried to make decisions based on limited and dwindling funds.
Given that about half of the commenters, myself included, know who the owner is, maybe Jon should have just come clean with it, or else stayed away from the post altogether.
I agree that at the very least the owner should be commended for fixing up a derelict property.
Instead of Rental of Day, this post should be titled, “Clinton Hill Flipper goes Bust!” or something like that.
The owner is such a fraud. In the summer of 08 this dude convinced JP Morgan to write him a $1.5 million mortgage($9854/month) AND a line of credit for $280K. $5500/month rent is still a huge loser for guy; an example of flipping gone bad.
As Maly mentioned, the dude swore he’d be using the property for his ‘big family’. He even snookered the LPC into allowing him a huge extension. Dormers etc.
given the disdain, can I get it for 3.8k/month rent? not kidding.
I have walked by this property every day for 15 years. For yrs this place was a pile of rotten falling apart abandoned wood — really most thought it was a huge teardown. Present owner sunk a fortune into it and frankly should be cheered for saving it. I hope the future economic situation improves enough for him to finish the job. That curb cut annoys me. Can it be legal?
That little bay window shelf with the shiny ebonized flooring cracked me up, too. Wonder what the kitchen looks like? I couldn’t make it out from the long shot. Will the terrace off the master br be finished with something else?
The renovation is not really to my taste but some potential renters will think it’s great. What do large 3 bedrooms go for in this area?
