A big one-bedroom, this Prospect Lefferts Gardens rental has room for a home office and offers a bit of outdoor space. It is on the raised first floor of 190 Sterling Street on one of the tree-lined streets within the historic district.
Part of a row designed by William Debus, plans for the stretch of houses were filed in 1910 by builder Louis Beer Sons. The company was advertising the houses in 1912 as in “beautiful Prospect Park East.” Because they were constructed outside of the original manor with its one-family restrictions, the Sterling Street houses were able to be originally built as two-family dwellings. The original stone facade of No. 190 was already altered with brick veneer and Permastone by the time of the 1979 historic district designation, although it does retain its cornice.
The five-room floor-through has the expected layout with larger front and rear rooms and two windowless rooms in the middle. More details can be seen in the virtual tour.
A few original details can be spied, including the wood floor with inlaid border in the front parlor along with the upper stained glass panes in the bay window. A later addition is the baseboard heating along one wall.
An arched opening leads to the first windowless room, which serves as a dining room. A bank of built-in storage closes it off from the second windowless room, creating an office or dressing room space that is open to the bedroom.
At the rear of the apartment, the windowed galley kitchen has wood cabinets, fruit accent tiles in the backsplash, and a door to a rear deck. There isn’t a dishwasher, but there is a bit of pantry space.
The bathroom has white wall tile, glass shower doors around the tub, and some storage.
While the rear yard is the domain of the owner who lives in the other unit, according to the listing, the rental does include the use of that small rear deck, which appears to have room for a bit of seating.
Listed by Kirsten Syrett of Compass, the apartment is priced at $3,000 a month. What do you think?
