The Brooklyn Paper reports that the NYPD will begin a borough-wide bike crackdown in a few weeks. More moving violations will be issued for the the failure to obey traffic signs and signals, surpassing the speed limit, tailgating, and failure to signal before turning. While the numbers of bicyclists is growing and the bike lanes on Prospect Park West have caused controversy, cops claim the reason for the crackdown is because bike accidents have been up. Some bikers aren’t convinced. Rider Lacy Tauber think cops should “focus on drivers,” while bike advocate Baruch Herzfeld thinks this could further strain the relationship between bikers and cops.

  1. NYguy- i wasn’t comparing them, I was making a statement about fact. And the fact is a guy on a bike, hitting a pedestrian can kill them. Laws of physics and all that. Randi said only cars kill and my comment was to that.

randi- I will try to find it- it happened quite a few years ago so I’ll see if I can find out something.

  2. Though, on reflection, maybe the Jan timing is intended to focus the crackdown on the professional cycling class, deliverypeople, messengers, and pedicabs, instead of ticketing a bunch of recreational cyclists in the summer.

  3. Twice in the past year speeding cars jumped the curb, crossed the sidewalk and took out the front yard fence of the corner brownstone down the block from me (Dean St). It’s only luck that nobody was hurt or killed. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a car ticketed on Dean St.

I’m not saying bad bikers aren’t a problem, but they are a very small problem compared to bad drivers.
