The Brooklyn Paper reports that the NYPD will begin a borough-wide bike crackdown in a few weeks. More moving violations will be issued for the the failure to obey traffic signs and signals, surpassing the speed limit, tailgating, and failure to signal before turning. While the numbers of bicyclists is growing and the bike lanes on Prospect Park West have caused controversy, cops claim the reason for the crackdown is because bike accidents have been up. Some bikers aren’t convinced. Rider Lacy Tauber think cops should “focus on drivers,” while bike advocate Baruch Herzfeld thinks this could further strain the relationship between bikers and cops.
Bikelash! Cops to Crack Down on 2-Wheelers [Brooklyn Paper]
motorists and cyclists both suck yes, but as this thread proves… it’s the cyclists who are often the biggest cry baby titty suckers. waaaaaah stop pickin’ on me. personally as a pedestrian i dont wanna be or even SEE brain soup on the street no matter how it was caused.

By all means, ticket people who litter. But, do NOT ticket jaywalkers. Jaywalking is a RIGHT in New York City. If you’re going to ticket jaywalkers, then fix the damn traffic lights so pedestrians don’t get stuck on the wrong side of Atlantic Avenue for 1/2 hour waiting for the light to change. Giuliani vowed to crack down on jaywalkers after he was re-elected, and he was almost recalled!
Glad to see some enforcement (am a biker) agree that January is a *ridiculous* time to do it, hope they prioritize what they’re going after – riding the wrong way is a huge problem, reckless stoplight-running is a significant problem, but tailgating and turnsignals are pretty ridiculous things to ticket for.
I mean, wtf is tailgating in new york, anyway? Everybody’s 24″ away from everybody else. And turnsignals? While I think cyclists should signal when they’re getting into your space (ie cutting across traffic) and am anal about it myself, if you’re turning right from the right side of the street, signaling is just dumb- who are you signaling to? It’s also a bit less safe, in that you’re riding one-handed for that period of time.
“it is important to remember that while bikers may be annoying and rude, CARS KILL PEOPLE.”
People kill people Randolph. Bikers make stupid decisions also that cause accidents that can hurt others and themselves. The bike lanes have been widely unregulated. Welcome to the NYC roads. Because every month NYPD will be ticketing like it’s going out of style.
About time in the bikers case.
It’s not bikes killing people left and right, or abandoning themselves in the middle of the streets and blocking snowplows, or turning our streets into death traps.
It’s cars. CARS CARS CARS. And sometimes trucks.
NYPD should focus their enforcement where the REAL safety problem is. Idiot car drivers who think they own the streets, and likely kill you when they hit you.
“I want proof- I believe you I just have never heard of such a thing. link me to an article…”
I’m sure it’s happened but this, “bikers kill people too” is just silly. You can’t compare the two.
I agree that bikers should be held to traffic standards, no doubt about it. But this is NYC where no one, and I mean NO ONE (bikers, drivers and pedestrians) follow all the laws.
Cars typically aren’t running through lights between other cars at the intersections when you are not suspecting them.
I saw a jackass delivery moron hit a guy in a wheelchair, yes, in a wheelchair, on Park ave as he rode between the cars, through the red light and into the intersection.
Luckily the crowd had gathered and held him there.
Virtually every single intersection I cross in Manhattan has bikers riding through it against the light.
Red light rule? How about just getting those jackasses to ride with traffic. I’m looking to my left on a one way street because that’s what the road dictates. I shouldn’t nearly get my head taken off because some jerk on a bike wants to ride teh wrong way down a one way street.
bike accidentss are also severely under reported. if you got hit by a car and you suffered NO damage, chances are the police are still going to be called. ive seen people crossing the street getting hit by bikes (twice actually in the SAME spot on 4th avenue) one turned into a brutal fight, and the other turned into just the pedestrian who fell to the ground and the biker exchanging words
ive never had problems with people who ride bikes in most areas tho. just the crowded streets in lower manhattan where i think it should be enforced. but the cars are crazy down here too
