The Brooklyn Paper reports that the NYPD will begin a borough-wide bike crackdown in a few weeks. More moving violations will be issued for the the failure to obey traffic signs and signals, surpassing the speed limit, tailgating, and failure to signal before turning. While the numbers of bicyclists is growing and the bike lanes on Prospect Park West have caused controversy, cops claim the reason for the crackdown is because bike accidents have been up. Some bikers aren’t convinced. Rider Lacy Tauber think cops should “focus on drivers,” while bike advocate Baruch Herzfeld thinks this could further strain the relationship between bikers and cops.
Bikelash! Cops to Crack Down on 2-Wheelers [Brooklyn Paper]
it is important to remember that while bikers may be annoying and rude, CARS KILL PEOPLE.
I support more enforcement against bikes and cars.
THANK GOD!!! Finally the hollier than thou “cyclists” zipping around Brooklyn like its the freakin Tour de France will be held to the same laws as the rest of us.
Sorry dudes but just cause you dont have any carbon emissions dosent mean you can zoom through a red light against traffic yelling at unsuspecting pedestrians all the while.
chuck, there has been little to NO enforcement against bikes. It’s time to start.
I sense a backlash coming against the DOT and Bloomberg over this bike lane issue.
On Monday night I went to a social event in the Gravesend area, where the snow removal effort had been abysmal. One of the top topics of conversation was the fact that the city had deployed personnel to HAND-SHOVEL the bike lanes in Manhattan the day after the storm, while folks in the outer reaches of Brooklyn had to wait 6 days for the streets to be usable. Cars were double-parked along all the major avenues there, the snow removal was that bad.
Drivers and bikers are both at fault but if this is a competition to see who’s worse, drivers win hands down.
So three Brooklyn toddlers are in the hospital in critical condition from SPEEDING CARS – and the NYPD (br)ass decides cracking down on cyclists will improve safety?
What a reactionary waste of time. No wonder this country is going down the tubes.
“surpassing the speed limit” is my favorite!
