The Brooklyn Paper reports that the NYPD will begin a borough-wide bike crackdown in a few weeks. More moving violations will be issued for the the failure to obey traffic signs and signals, surpassing the speed limit, tailgating, and failure to signal before turning. While the numbers of bicyclists is growing and the bike lanes on Prospect Park West have caused controversy, cops claim the reason for the crackdown is because bike accidents have been up. Some bikers aren’t convinced. Rider Lacy Tauber think cops should “focus on drivers,” while bike advocate Baruch Herzfeld thinks this could further strain the relationship between bikers and cops.

  1. I think it’s fine, and I ride every day for work. Ticket the salmonistas, the light-blowers, the sidewalk riders.

But definitely also step up enforcement of drivers, like the guy who hit my 12 year old neighbor (who was riding his bike sanely) on Christmas eve.

  2. Cyclists are stupid- responsible cyclist (are there any?) should welcome such a crackdown. It is one thing to bitch about motorists when you are essentially borrowing the road from them…but now the city has dedicated significant public space and resources to cycling and clearly a backlash is growing – if cyclists are seen as exempt from the law then their public support will be very low (cyclists will likely always be a minority road user) and many of the gains they have secured will be quickly rolled back during the next administration. If cyclists are seen as a responsible road users (who help ease congestion and pollution) than they may be able to keep and expand their new found rights.

But alas most cyclists I see are arrogant morons with a chip on their shoulder (who BTW virtually NEVER follow traffic rules)and so as a group they will likely squander this political inflection point and 3 years from now….bikes and bike lanes will be back to irrelevant.

  3. Bxgirl – 20 pedestrians killed by cyclists over a 10 year period. Agreed.

In the same time period in NYC, 1,711 pedestrians were killed according to http://www.crashstat.org. Taking out the 20 killed by cyclists, shows that 98.8% of pedestrian fatalities are causes by automobiles.

So, yes, cyclists kill pedestrians – at about the same rate as falling tree limbs and collapsing scaffolding.
