Will somebody please put this listing out of its misery and buy it! The brownstone at 1418 Pacific Street in Crown Heights has been on the market for more than three years by our calculations. It was an Open House Pick in April 2007 when it was asking $999,999. The price now is down to $700,000, which has to be getting close to the market-clearing number given the amount of original architectural detail and the proximity to the Brooklyn Children’s Museum. What’s it gonna take?

Montrose Morris always becomes hysterical when anyone hints that the crime rate in Crown Heights might be higher than that in other brownstone areas. Funny, in today’s blog links ILFA, in an article that MM praised, the following statistic was given about the area near the Albany Houses (where this house is located):
“The New York Times Homicide Map shows 32 violent deaths within a quarter-mile of the Albany Houses since 2003.”
Try as you might, you will never find a comparable area in Park Slope or Brooklyn Heights.
It must be terrible to have invested so much money in a home in a neighborhood rife with violent crime and a reputation to match. That, more than anything, will prevent property values from increasing during the next boom (especially when the city’s intake center is moved to the Bedford Armory).
And, on a final note, Rockaway Avenue is most definitely NOT in Crown Heights. It is and always has been located in Brownsville.
MM, it only takes a very small amount of people to make a neighborhood unfriendly for certain people. a VERY small amount. you know that, i know that, everyone knows that. no one is saying the a majority of crown heights resident feel that way, it would be absurd to even think that. but there is a small VERY vocal minority that DO make it unappealing and unwelcoming. to deny that is just putting your head in the sand.
it’s like being in a room of 50 people and 2 of them fart. the room still smells regardless of the fact that there are 48 people with manners who dont pass gas in public!

If we go by bias attacks reported to the police, then the Village is an anti-gay neighborhood, and “one of the least safe neighborhoods to be gay in.”
and you are right on that. unfortunately that is tranny on tranny crime (kid you not)
*rob*
And rob, you personally have never had them thrown at you in Crown Heights, either. What’s your point?
I have gay friends who live here, have lived here for many years, and have never had insults thrown at them in CH, either. You calling them liars? Delusional? They don’t count?
Don’t like the analogy of the Village? Think it’s unfair because of the numbers, or the make up of the Village, or any number of factors? Now you know how I feel.
Stop with the generalizing about places and people and I’ll leave you alone.
“If we go by bias attacks reported to the police, then the Village is an anti-gay neighborhood, and “one of the least safe neighborhoods to be gay in.””
With all due respect, MM this statement is loaded because MANY more gay people hang out in the Village than in Crown Heights.
Even with that said, I’m not sure your statement is accurate, but I guarantee you, I have NEVER had insults thrown at me from strangers while walking around the Village. Never.
Yep, there is street crime in Crown Heights and in some ways the neighborhood needs to improve from that perspective. There is definitely an element around here that’s up to no good. They are in the minority generally but of course attract disproportionate attention. But in many ways it is a terrific neighborhood; it just has challenges, like many neighborhoods. That some of the folks who post here are afraid to live or visit is quite predictable, and is not indicative in any way of the neighborhood’s overall quality in my opinion.
BSD, Crown Heights is almost as large as Bed Stuy. It stretches from Washington to Rockaway Ave, Atlantic Ave to Empire Blvd. Any neighborhood that size, that covers at least 3 or 4 different precincts, is going to have some elevated numbers. Some parts of CH are obviously not as good as others. However, where I am, in the middle, basically, is not the hellhole some would like to portray it as.
Like Biff, I’d like to see Rob’s statistics. He doesn’t have any, he is basing this on anecdotes, some from the friends of someone he usually doesn’t even like. Any port in a storm. As I have said, I don’t deny there are anti-gay jerks in my neighborhood. That does not make my neighborhood anti-gay. It is NOT a “known fact”. I want to see facts that this is “one of the least safe neighborhoods to be gay in.” There are none. If we go by bias attacks reported to the police, then the Village is an anti-gay neighborhood, and “one of the least safe neighborhoods to be gay in.”
LOL dipster hahah

anyone else kinda scared to ride the train home today?
